  • Pur Sang is French for thoroughbred and is a joke that reflects Dagueneau’s annoyance at repeated references to the fact (by journalists) that he uses a horse to till some of vineyards.  This is produced primarily from a vineyard north of Saint Andelain called La Folie. The soil here is deep clay with some limestone. The vineyard is gently sloped and has perfect south/southeast exposure. Some smaller parcels on the Saint Andelain hill occasionally also make it into this cuvée. Barrel fermented and aged. This is always a rich and powerful cuvée, enormously textural and complex. It is a wine that can live and live.

The 2012 Chardonnay Collezione Privata was slightly reduced when I first tasted it, so I asked Paolo De Marchi if I could take the open bottle back to my hotel to taste it a few hours later. When I did, I found that the wine had opened considerably and those flinty, volcanic tones had blown off. The bouquet shows apricot, cantaloupe melon and white almond paste. There is a natural creaminess to the wine that makes it very attractive once it gets revved up. Make sure you give this wine ample time to breathe.

There is no way not to be totally overwhelmed by the stunning beauty of the tiny twin hamlets of Isole and Olena that straddle either side of this historic property. Paolo De Marchi's enthusiastic and engaging personality defines the landmark set of wines before you.

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques is the only cru that underwent some chaptalization this year – a modest 0.5 degrees alcohol. It has an elegant bouquet with dark plum and redcurrant scents, freshly tilled soil and woodland surfacing with aeration. The palate has a sweet entry and a pleasant, slightly grainy texture, though it does not quite deliver the finesse of the Morey Charmes. Still, this is a thoroughly decent Gevrey premier cru. Drink 2015-2023.

A wonderfully expansive, velvety textured, rich, full-bodied mouthfeel, are super and very impressive in the 2012 Le Clarence de Haut Brion. This is far higher quality than what most people would consider a second wine, even when coming from a first-growth chateau. Mulberry, spice box and expansive, rich flavors backed up by velvety tannins characterize this medium to full-bodied beautiful wine to drink now and over the next 15-20 years. Pale lemon-gold colored, the 2012 Climens has a slightly evolved nose sporting honeyed nut and toast notes with a core of lemon pie, fresh hay and allspice. Big, rich and powerful in the mouth, with maturing citrus and stone fruit notions, it has a provocatively spicy finish.

  • Tasting note: This is also quite elegant with its equally spicy nose of honeysuckle, yellow and white orchard fruit and citrus elements. There is a lovely vibrancy to the concentrated and relatively large-scaled flavors that possess good power on the markedly dry and somewhat compact edgy finish. As with the Combettes my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that the finish will flesh out and the dryness will dissipate with time.

The 2012 Bolgheri Le Serre Nuove is a voluptuous and generous wine that bursts forth with wild-cherry aromas, blackberry, crème de cassis, oak spice and smoke. The blend of grapes this year is 52% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 12% Petit Verdot. It awards pleasure and smoothness, thanks to its plump tannins and ripe fruit overtones. Le Serre Nuove shows the acidity and structure for ten years or more of cellar aging.

  • Tasting note: This is notably fresher than the Clos du Roi with its pretty aromas of earth, game, dried flowers and assorted red berry scents. There is a pungently earthy character to the broad-shouldered, intense and muscular flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins before concluding in a powerful and persistent if not especially complex finish. This isn't as powerful or dramatic as the Clos du Roi though I prefer the balance and overall sense of completeness.

There is excellent richness and body to the large-scaled, mineral-inflected and openly powerful flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract before terminating in a striking long finish. There is an opulent and caressing mouth feel to the very rich and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract before terminating in a delicious, mineral-driven and impressively long finish. This is rich to the point of succulence and while it will certainly age well this will be approachable much earlier than usual.

Producer note: Nicole Lamarche told me that they began picking the 2013 crop "on the 6th of October and there was quite a bit of sorting required and just to be sure we sorted twice as it's hard to be precise in the vineyards. The flowering passed poorly so our yields were down around once again around 30% but at least we weren't hit by hail. There was good phenolic maturity to the fruit and I elected to use around 30% whole clusters, which is about the same amount that I employed in 2012. That said the fruit didn't have the same concentration as it did in 2012 so there was no point in pushing the extraction. Moreover I really wanted to preserve the freshness and silky textures that appeal to me so I limited the number of punch downs. As to the wines they are refreshing and wonderfully transparent as you can really see the differences between one wine and another." Lamarche noted that her 2012s, three of which are revisited below, were bottled in April 2014. Tasting note: There is just enough wood to notice framing the red currant, black cherry and plum aromas that also display pretty floral and spice notes. There is fine concentration, power and punch to the refined and classy middle weight flavors that possess excellent intensity on the balanced, mouth coating, velvety and beautifully persistent finish. This too will need at least a decade plus of bottle age.

This St.-Emilion (1,000 cases), which has a very high percentage of Cabernet Franc (80%, which is much higher than Cheval Blanc or Ausone) has always been the flagship wine of proprietor Jonathan Malthus. The 2012 has a dense ruby/purple color and plenty of raspberry and blueberry fruit intermixed with spring flower garden notes, which are followed by a medium-bodied wine with stunning elegance, purity and minerality. It is not the biggest wine, but the quality of the fruit, the complex nuances, and overall equilibrium make for a very special Bordeaux to drink over the next 15 or so years.

Red Burgundy Dujac 2012 Echezeaux

1 Bottle 75cl £415
  • Tasting note: An exuberantly spicy and floral nose features a variety of red berry fruit scents laced with hints of sandalwood and Asian spices. There is a silky and restrained mouth feel to the intense, concentrated and detailed flavors that brim with dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the moderately firm tannins on the lingering finale. This is unusually accessible in the context of the Dujac 2012s and should drink well earlier than any of these grand crus.

  • The 2012 Bonnes Mares presents an intriguing push and pull between some of the more delicate notes that appear initially and its underlying, restrained power. This is another wine where so much is implied rather than overt. As always, the Mugnier Bonnes Mares is above all else a wine of restraint, although in this vintage, there is plenty of depth as well.

1 Bottle 75cl £390
  • The 2012 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet with lively red berry fruit mixed with bergamot and fresh strawberry. It does not quite have the presence of say Bernard Dugat's example: more introverted and bashful. The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit on the opening, luscious red berries laced with orange zest and a hint of vanilla. The finish is nigh irresistible - full of vigor and tension with peach on the aftertaste. After a slow opening this finishes with grandeur and ambition.

  • Tasting note: Here the surprisingly expressive nose is even more complex with broad-ranging aromas of various floral and white fleshed fruit scents that also display top notes of spice, all of which is again framed in discreet oak hints. This is a big Bâtard where the broad-shouldered flavors brim with palate soaking dry extract that does a fine job of effectively buffering the very firm acid spine that keeps everything in balance on the opulently textured and hugely long finish. Moreover this is strikingly complex, indeed it rivals the Montrachet for being the most complex wine in the range.

Producer note: Chantal Tortochot, who directs this biologically farmed 11 ha domaine, described 2012 as a "tiny vintage where yields were off fully 40% due mostly to a poor flowering that provoked a high incidence of shatter and shot berries. We made an amazing 21 treatments against mildew alone because it was constantly wet. All of the rain made treating the vines all the more difficult because it was a challenge just to get the machinery into the vineyards. In fact we did the last couple of treatments manually with the scuba diver-like tanks that you carry on your back! July was thankfully warm and sunny though we had one 10 day period of very hot weather that sunburned some of the exposed bunches and that cost us some yield as well. Suffice it to say that it was necessary to thoroughly sort but what we were left with was superb, indeed about as good as I have seen in terms of the raw materials. I like the wines a lot as they're ripe, concentrated and serious though not so much so that they won't be approachable young if that's what clients want." I was very impressed with the quality of the Tortochot 2012s, revisited below, in particular at the lower levels of the range. Tortochot noted that her 2012s were bottled between September 2013 and March 2014. The Tortochot wines are generally relatively old school in terms of style and structure though they do evidence noticeable wood when the wines are young. Tasting note: There is a plenitude of sauvage character to the earth and tea-infused aromas of red berry, dark currant and humus scents. This is also seductively textured but notably more powerful as the big-bodied, intense and more obviously mineral-inflected flavors possess positively huge length on the strikingly complex finale. This is a seriously structured effort but there is so much mid-palate sap that it should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of cellaring.

2012 has to be one of the best recent vintages of Alión. This 2012 Alión is pure Tempranillo from vineyards averaging 25 to 30 years of age, harvested at the end of September and matured for 14 months in new French oak barrels. The nose is much more elegant than the Pintia from Toro (I tasted them together), still very fresh and primary but with a special brightness of fruit, shiny cherries, raspberries, something effervescent, open and somehow exuberant. The palate is quite round, much more polished, with some notes of dark chocolate, some subtle volatility, elegant, fresh and long. It has the balance and stuffing to develop nicely in bottle. Superb balance, Ribera character, clean, modern classic. 280,000 bottles were produced.

What the wine does best is paint a portrait of the grape in its most pure and naked state. It offers crisp outlines with loads of wild berry, blue flower and moist earth on the inside. That balanced ensemble of flavors adds to the long and polished persistence you feel in the mouth. It's very interesting that over the last few years we have had less than ideal growing seasons yet the wines have turned out to be better than merely acceptable. Part of this is of course improved methods of viticulture but also both producer and consumers are more accepting of the fact that a less than ideal growing season does not automatically equate to poor wines the way it often once did. I like my 2012s and I hope my clients do too. I just wish that I had more of them." I would call the Mongeard 2012s as very much performing in-line with the overall quality of the vintage. As I explained last year, 2011 was the last vintage for the old vines Echézeaux because the parcel that has been historically used to produce it was donated to the Hospices de Beaune by its owner (this parcel had been leased by Mongeard). I very much like the overall depth yet it's all but certain that more will develop as this possesses ample amounts of underlying material. A classic Bèze that is built to age.

Red Burgundy de Vogue 2012 Bonnes Mares

1 Case 12 75cl £3,600
  • Deep ruby. This is also quite floral yet the character of it is from whiter flowers than those of the Amoureuses. In addition there is good ripeness but also fine freshness to the plum, black cherry, cassis and blueberry aromas. The supple but tautly muscular medium weight plus flavors possess a suave mouth feel thanks to the abundant dry extract that both coats the palate and buffers the very firm tannic spine on the highly persistent finish. Patience will be required.

Flaunting a gorgeous nose of ripe apricots, warm pineapples and green mango, with touches of cashew pieces, cedar, beeswax and toast, the medium-bodied 2012 Chardonnay delivers outstanding concentration of stone fruit and nutty/toasty flavor layers on the palate along with a racy line of acidity and a long finish that has a lovely, spicy character. Drink it now to 2019+.

Deep garnet in color with a slight purple in the rim, Moss Wood's 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with notes of crème de cassis, blackberry tart and anise with nuances of cloves, cedar, pencil lead, menthol and dark chocolate. Medium-bodied with oodles of opulence and spice on offer in the mouth, it has a gorgeous velvety texture, just enough freshness and great length.

Special Report (Sep 2015), The Wine Advocate

Leading off the reds in the retrospective, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape hit a whopping 15.7% natural alcohol, yet doesn't show a trace of heat in its gorgeous bouquet of kirsch liqueur, blackberries, Asian spice, cured meats and garrigue. This is followed by a thick, concentrated, seamless 2012 that has the vintage's purity and rounded nature, plenty of sweet tannin, and a killer finish. Already hard to resist, it will cruise for another 15-20 years.

Red Bordeaux 2012 Ausone

1 Case 6 150cl £3,900£3,800
  • One can’t say enough about the amazing job that Alain Vauthier and his daughter have done at this historic property on the decomposed limestone slopes of St.-Emilion. Not surprisingly, the 2012 Ausone is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage. Inky purple in color, with notes of crushed rocks, spring flowers and blueberry and black raspberry, the wine grows on the palate, offering up amazing concentration. There is no heaviness or cloying characteristics. Pure, rich, full-bodied and, although accessible, it is capable of lasting 30 or more years. This will be one of the profound 2012s, following what Haut Brion and Mission Haut Brion did in Pessac-Léognan. Drink it 2022-2050+. 96+ points – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #218, April 2015)

Italy 2012 Isole e Olena Cepparello

2 Bottle 300cl £250
  • The 2012 Cepparello is just as compelling as it has always been. Sweet, ample and generous from the outset, the 2012 shows all of its pedigree, even at this early stage. Radiant fruit and exquisite aromatics make a strong opening statement as the wine fleshes out in the glass. Ample, creamy and super-expressive, the 2012 is shaping up to be a superb Cepparello. The only thing the 2012 needs is time. An up and down year with hot temperatures in July and early August, followed by rain in September forced DeMarchi to be especially selective and bottle only the best lots. Production is down to 30,000 bottles from 36,000 in 2013 and 32,400 in 2011.
