Loire 2012 Dagueneau Pouilly Fume Pur Sang

1 Case 6 75cl £475
  • Pur Sang is French for thoroughbred and is a joke that reflects Dagueneau’s annoyance at repeated references to the fact (by journalists) that he uses a horse to till some of vineyards.  This is produced primarily from a vineyard north of Saint Andelain called La Folie. The soil here is deep clay with some limestone. The vineyard is gently sloped and has perfect south/southeast exposure. Some smaller parcels on the Saint Andelain hill occasionally also make it into this cuvée. Barrel fermented and aged. This is always a rich and powerful cuvée, enormously textural and complex. It is a wine that can live and live.

2 Case 6 75cl £250
Italy 2012 San Guido Le Difese

1 Case 6 75cl £60
  • The 2012 Le Difese is a bright and fruit-forward blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Sangiovese (aged one year in oak) that shows a point of ripe fruit or strawberry at the very start. There’s a frank simplicity to this wine that makes it a pleasure to drink without too much contemplation. That solid core of ripe fruit is embellished by soft contours of spice and tobacco.

The 2012 Chardonnay Collezione Privata was slightly reduced when I first tasted it, so I asked Paolo De Marchi if I could take the open bottle back to my hotel to taste it a few hours later. When I did, I found that the wine had opened considerably and those flinty, volcanic tones had blown off. The bouquet shows apricot, cantaloupe melon and white almond paste. There is a natural creaminess to the wine that makes it very attractive once it gets revved up. Make sure you give this wine ample time to breathe.

There is no way not to be totally overwhelmed by the stunning beauty of the tiny twin hamlets of Isole and Olena that straddle either side of this historic property. Paolo De Marchi's enthusiastic and engaging personality defines the landmark set of wines before you.

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques is the only cru that underwent some chaptalization this year – a modest 0.5 degrees alcohol. It has an elegant bouquet with dark plum and redcurrant scents, freshly tilled soil and woodland surfacing with aeration. The palate has a sweet entry and a pleasant, slightly grainy texture, though it does not quite deliver the finesse of the Morey Charmes. Still, this is a thoroughly decent Gevrey premier cru. Drink 2015-2023.

Red Bordeaux 2012 Clarence de Haut Brion

  • ROBERT PARKER

A wonderfully expansive, velvety textured, rich, full-bodied mouthfeel, are super and very impressive in the 2012 Le Clarence de Haut Brion. This is far higher quality than what most people would consider a second wine, even when coming from a first-growth chateau. Mulberry, spice box and expansive, rich flavors backed up by velvety tannins characterize this medium to full-bodied beautiful wine to drink now and over the next 15-20 years. Red Burgundy Drouhin Joseph 2012 Lavaux Saint Jacques

1 Case 6 75cl £450£420
  • Tasting note: This is really quite aromatically pretty with its fresh and cool aromas of red and black pinot fruit, earth, game and wet stone nuances. The sense of minerality continues onto the intense, delineated and energetic flavors that display noticeable wood toast on the lingering, dusty and mildly austere finish. This is firmly structured yet balanced and should reward longer-term cellaring if desired as this could be approached young too.

  • eRobertParker.com #218

    Apr 2015 Robert M. Parker, Jr. 91 Drink: 2015 - 2030 $56-$72
Overlying deep limestone, this vineyard sits at the entrance to the medieval village of St.-Emilion. The 2012 (80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc) is rich and full-bodied, with intense minerality, good acidity, plenty of black cherry, raspberry and brambleberry fruit, and a briary Zinfandel-like character intermixed with the crushed rock and spice. This is an impressively endowed St.-Emilion. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.

Pale lemon-gold colored, the 2012 Climens has a slightly evolved nose sporting honeyed nut and toast notes with a core of lemon pie, fresh hay and allspice. Big, rich and powerful in the mouth, with maturing citrus and stone fruit notions, it has a provocatively spicy finish.

White Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2012 Bienvenues Batard Montrachet

3 Bottle 300cl £695
  • Tasting note: This is also quite elegant with its equally spicy nose of honeysuckle, yellow and white orchard fruit and citrus elements. There is a lovely vibrancy to the concentrated and relatively large-scaled flavors that possess good power on the markedly dry and somewhat compact edgy finish. As with the Combettes my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that the finish will flesh out and the dryness will dissipate with time.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2012 Vosne 1er Cru Petits Monts

2 Case 6 75cl £360
  • Tasting note: Here the wood is more moderate if by no means invisible as it sets off the overtly spicy and fresh nose that mixes both red and dark berry fruit aromas that display subtle menthol nuances. There is good punch to the supple and fleshy medium weight flavors that evidence plenty of minerality, all wrapped in a solidly persistent and well-layered finale. This should reward 10 to 12 years of cellar time.

The 2012 Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Proces has a wonderful, energetic yet sophisticated bouquet with vibrant red and black fruit married harmoniously with the oak. The palate is very smooth on the entry with supple, lithe tannins that caress the mouth. The acidity is well-judged with tart, dark cherry fruit interlaced with hints of soy, while the finish is focused and long. This Nuits Saint Georges has great potential.

The 2012 Bolgheri Le Serre Nuove is a voluptuous and generous wine that bursts forth with wild-cherry aromas, blackberry, crème de cassis, oak spice and smoke. The blend of grapes this year is 52% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 12% Petit Verdot. It awards pleasure and smoothness, thanks to its plump tannins and ripe fruit overtones. Le Serre Nuove shows the acidity and structure for ten years or more of cellar aging.

Red Burgundy Vougeraie 2012 Clos de Vougeot

2 Case 3 150cl £440
  • Tasting note: This is notably fresher than the Clos du Roi with its pretty aromas of earth, game, dried flowers and assorted red berry scents. There is a pungently earthy character to the broad-shouldered, intense and muscular flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins before concluding in a powerful and persistent if not especially complex finish. This isn't as powerful or dramatic as the Clos du Roi though I prefer the balance and overall sense of completeness.

The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots is pointed on the nose, the fruit veering toward black rather than red in hue, with blackcurrant and wilted violet petals emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry: notes of black cherries, raspberry and soy that surface toward the composed and harmonious finish. Perhaps not a long-term Santenots like other 2012s that I have encountered, nevertheless this is a finely crafted wine destined to dish out pleasure.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2012 Morey 1er Cru Clos des Ormes

5 Bottle 75cl £30
  • Tasting note: Barnier indicated that this was not vinified by Jadot. There is a background note of menthol to the pretty and fresh red currant, earth and lightly spicy nose. There is a very supple and refined mouth feel to the satin-textured middle weight flavors that also possess a seductive mouth feel, all wrapped in a balanced finish. This should drink well young.
