Red Burgundy Lafon 2011 Monthelie Les Duresses 1er Cru

1 Case 6 75cl £270
  • Lafon's 2011 Monthélie is sweet, supple and seductive. Dark red cherry pit, flowers and spices meld together in a soft, voluptuous wine loaded with tons of appeal. The 2011 offers gorgeous resonance, volume and texture, not to mention considerable pleasure. Dominique Lafon makes more important reds, but I often find myself attracted to the Monthélie for the pure joy it so often delivers.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Vosne 1er Cru Beaux Monts

2 Case 6 75cl £325
  • Tasting note: A very spicy nose of primarily black cherry and cassis aromas also precedes very round, supple and forward flavors that possess the same attractively textured mouth feel to the medium-bodied flavors that also seem to lack a bit of energy on the nicely lingering finish. Again, it's possible that this is just fatigued and this is quite plausible given that Beaux Monts naturally has good acid levels.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Clos Saint Jacques

2 Case 6 75cl £475
  • Tasting note: A very pretty and expressive nose features notes of relatively high-toned red berry fruit allied with ample amounts of earth and sauvage characters. The lighter weight (but by no means dilute) middle weight flavors exude an intense minerality while displaying excellent delineation and punch on the balanced and impressively long finish that evidences just a hint of acid tang. This doesn't have the sheer density of say the 2009, 2010 or 2012 vintages but I very much like the flavor authority. Note that this benefitted enormously from several hours of air, indeed the wine was notably better the next day. In sum, this won't knock you out out with power but it's one classy and ultra-pure wine.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Clos Saint Denis

3 Case 6 75cl £690
  • Tasting note: A tight and while not completely closed, it would be fair to describe as the nose of subtly layered and spicy dark currant aromas as highly restrained. By contrast, there is fine vibrancy and freshness to the silky and focused middle weight flavors that are shaped by fine grained if distinctly firm tannins, all wrapped in a wonderfully intense, mouth coating, impressively persistent and austere finish. This may be a Clos St. Denis of finesse but it doesn't lack for power or seriousness.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Mazis Chambertin

1 Case 12 75cl £1,025
  • Tasting note: There is a bit more wood on the fresh and open sauvage-infused nose of both red and dark currant, earth and game hints. There is excellent volume to the very smooth and polished mid-palate of the broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of dry extract before culminating in a mineral-inflected, powerful and long finish. This moderately firm effort is supported by tannins that are ripe if borderline rustic. A classic Mazis.

Red Burgundy Rousseau 2011 Ruchottes Chambertin

5 Bottle 75cl £395
  • Tasting note: Not surprisingly this hasn't changed greatly since my last review in January 2014 (see herein) and most of my original tasting note remains apt. An adroit but not invisible application of wood frames cool, pure and restrained red and dark berry fruit, truffle and spice aromas that are becoming slightly earthier. There is good richness and volume to the intensely mineral-driven flavors that terminate in a beautifully complex, lengthy and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is very classy and should be excellent in due course. I should note that this is actually enjoyable now and while it is nowhere near its full maturity it is lovely thanks to the fine balance. Tasted twice recently with consistent results.

Red Burgundy de Montille 2011 Vosne 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Christiane

1 Case 6 75cl £2,225
  • Good full medium red. Dark cherry, raspberry, pungent spices, pepper and graphite minerality on the nose. Sappy and saline but less fruity and more introspective today than the "regular" Malconsorts, with nicely integrated flavors of spices, flowers and minerals currently holding the upper hand over the wine's dark fruits. Finishes with superb, slowly mounting length and dusty tannins. This serious, uncompromising, classically dry wine will need to expand in bottle and should ultimately merit a higher score.

The 2011 Langhe Nebbiolo Conteisa is an irresistible wine with enormous depth, beauty and penetration. It sweeps over the palate in opulent waves with dark fruit, spice, leather and grilled herbs. It also shows a distinct balsam personality with cola and dried violets that give the wine a beautiful sense of aromatic lift and buoyancy. Langhe Conteisa is made with Nebbiolo (and a tiny part Barbera) from the Cerequio vineyard in La Morra. The 2011 vintage is slightly broader than past vintages, but this wine promises a long drinking evolution regardless.

Red Burgundy Dujac 2011 Bonnes Mares

3 Bottle 75cl £450£425
  • Tasting note: This is highly expressive, indeed unusually so for very young Bonnes Mares, and offers up nothing short of a kaleidoscopic array of scents that include a wide range of floral, earth, stone and mostly red berry fruit aromas. There is fine if not special density and focused power to the big-bodied flavors that are overtly powerful and quite muscular yet there is no trace of rusticity or absence of refinement to the hugely long finish. This is a succulent yet formidable Bonnes Mares that should amply reward those who have the (considerable) patience to wait for its full maturity. Burghound

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Chambolle 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

2 Bottle 300cl £795
  • Tasting note: A spicy and notably floral nose of attractively layered aromas features notes of cassis, black cherry and plum aromas. There is a lovely mineral streak that runs the length of the refined medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent complexity, all wrapped in a balanced, lingering and lilting finish. I very much like the finesse and brilliant mouth feel as it's pure silk.

    Jun 2016 Neal Martin 94 Drink: 2025 - 2060
The 2011 Climens repeated its performance from a few months ago. There is a tangible richness on the nose, touches of honeycomb and chalk infusing the honeyed fruit before those fig-like scents begin to emerge. The palate is beautifully balanced, unctuous in the mouth with a lovely salinity coming through on the long finish. It is way too young to strut its stuff at the moment, so afford it at least a decade in bottle. Tasted April 2016.

Red Burgundy de Montille 2011 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens

oc

1 Case 3 150cl £295
  • Tasting note: This is also quite restrained with ultra-pure aromas of wet stone, floral hints, sandalwood and very fresh red berry fruit scents. There is a focused power to the robust yet refined medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of supporting sap that helps to buffer the otherwise firm and well-integrated tannic spine on the explosively long, balanced and moderately austere finish. This beauty will also require ample patience.
