3 Bottle 150cl £625
Red Burgundy Drouhin Joseph 2017 Gevrey 1er Cru Clos Prieur

2 Case 6 75cl £450
  • Cask sample. Scented again like so many of these Drouhin 2017s, scented with dark-red fruit and a stemmy freshness. Peppery, firm, spicy and generous even in its elegant framework. Long and satisfying and fresh.

Red Burgundy Drouhin Joseph 2016 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Proces

1 Case 6 75cl £295
  • Cask sample. 10% whole cluster. 17 months in oak.
Mid crimson with quite a bit of blue. Pure cherry fruit, dark and red, seasoned with peppery spice and a light but sure dark, minerally note adding freshness. Dry, firm, so elegant in texture, subtle, dark and incredibly long. Lovely even in its infant state. (JH)

Red Burgundy Drouhin Joseph 2009 Gevrey 1er Cru Champeaux

4 Case 6 75cl £245
Red Burgundy Drouhin Joseph 2012 Lavaux Saint Jacques

1 Case 6 75cl £450
  • Tasting note: This is really quite aromatically pretty with its fresh and cool aromas of red and black pinot fruit, earth, game and wet stone nuances. The sense of minerality continues onto the intense, delineated and energetic flavors that display noticeable wood toast on the lingering, dusty and mildly austere finish. This is firmly structured yet balanced and should reward longer-term cellaring if desired as this could be approached young too.

The 2012 Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Proces has a wonderful, energetic yet sophisticated bouquet with vibrant red and black fruit married harmoniously with the oak. The palate is very smooth on the entry with supple, lithe tannins that caress the mouth. The acidity is well-judged with tart, dark cherry fruit interlaced with hints of soy, while the finish is focused and long. This Nuits Saint Georges has great potential.

The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots is pointed on the nose, the fruit veering toward black rather than red in hue, with blackcurrant and wilted violet petals emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry: notes of black cherries, raspberry and soy that surface toward the composed and harmonious finish. Perhaps not a long-term Santenots like other 2012s that I have encountered, nevertheless this is a finely crafted wine destined to dish out pleasure.

Tasting note: This is turning out better than I foresaw as my original review (see herein) noted some finishing dryness but that was not the case here. A still exceptionally fresh and very primary if highly perfumed nose is composed of spicy red berry fruit aromas that are at once layered and pure. There is both excellent richness and volume to the naturally sweet, detailed and intensely mineral-infused medium-full flavors that exude a subtle classiness on the powerful and focused finale. If there is a nit it's that the complexity that this normally displays isn't present, or at least not yet. That said I underscore that this is in magnum and thus the '06 Musigny is still a decade plus away from its apogee. In sum this is classy stuff that is very definitely still on the way up so patience required and particularly so in the larger format bottling.
