  • Tasting note: This is also quite elegant with its equally spicy nose of honeysuckle, yellow and white orchard fruit and citrus elements. There is a lovely vibrancy to the concentrated and relatively large-scaled flavors that possess good power on the markedly dry and somewhat compact edgy finish. As with the Combettes my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that the finish will flesh out and the dryness will dissipate with time.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2012 Vosne 1er Cru Petits Monts

2 Case 6 75cl £360
  • Tasting note: Here the wood is more moderate if by no means invisible as it sets off the overtly spicy and fresh nose that mixes both red and dark berry fruit aromas that display subtle menthol nuances. There is good punch to the supple and fleshy medium weight flavors that evidence plenty of minerality, all wrapped in a solidly persistent and well-layered finale. This should reward 10 to 12 years of cellar time.

  • The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has similar fruit intensity to the Les Baudes, although the oak is a little more vocal and therefore it does not quite have the same transparency. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. This is quite strict and linear at the moment, showing good grip, although I discern more complexity and nuance on the Les Baudes.

  • Tasting note: There is enough wood spice present to remark upon though not so much as to mask the pretty and airy combination of various red berry aromas that are sprinkled with earth and floral nuances. I like the refinement of the round, supple and attractively textured middle weight flavors that are shaped by firm but well-integrated tannins on the solidly persistent and well-balanced finale. In a word, lovely.

    Chambolle-Musigny "Les Amoureuses"
    1er Cru Red 750 ml

Tasting note: This remains quite primary with high-pitched dark fruit aromas and flavors that display excellent complexity and near perfect balance. While not especially powerful, it offers solid concentration and fine length. One of the better de Vogüé Amoureuses in recent years and shows particularly good balance and a fine sense of "pinot noirness".

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2012 Clos de la Roche -

2 Case 6 75cl £650
  • Tasting note: A pungently earthy nose also offers supporting aromas of gentle wood, spice and both red and dark fruit components. There is excellent richness and body to the large-scaled, mineral-inflected and openly powerful flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract before terminating in a striking long finish. This is a robust and very serious effort that possesses excellent cellaring potential and note well that it will need it as this is presently a bruiser. 93/100

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Clos Saint Denis

3 Case 6 75cl £690
  • Tasting note: A tight and while not completely closed, it would be fair to describe as the nose of subtly layered and spicy dark currant aromas as highly restrained. By contrast, there is fine vibrancy and freshness to the silky and focused middle weight flavors that are shaped by fine grained if distinctly firm tannins, all wrapped in a wonderfully intense, mouth coating, impressively persistent and austere finish. This may be a Clos St. Denis of finesse but it doesn't lack for power or seriousness.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Mazis Chambertin

1 Case 12 75cl £1,025
  • Tasting note: There is a bit more wood on the fresh and open sauvage-infused nose of both red and dark currant, earth and game hints. There is excellent volume to the very smooth and polished mid-palate of the broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of dry extract before culminating in a mineral-inflected, powerful and long finish. This moderately firm effort is supported by tannins that are ripe if borderline rustic. A classic Mazis.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2016 Chambolle 1er Cru Baudes

2 Case 6 75cl £350
  • 91-93 Burghound

Tasting note: A toasty nose features notes of menthol, spiced tea, red currant and a hint of cherry liqueur. The velvety, rich and seductively textured medium weight flavors possess the usual muscularity of a fine Les Baudes, all wrapped in a robust and even more structured finale that is long, balanced and very serious. I would not advise buying this high-quality effort without the express intention to allow it at least 6 to 8 years first.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2015 Vosne 1er Cru Suchots

1 Case 3 150cl £450
  • Tasting note: In contrast to the prior two wines this is aromatically much more reserved though aggressive swirling eventually liberates Asian spice box, tea, plum and violet scents. There is fine richness to the very suave and highly seductive medium-bodied flavors thanks to the abundant amounts of dry extract that impart a sappy texture to the lingering and solidly complex finale. This is both classy and stylish and built to reward medium plus-term aging.

  • Tasting note: Deep ruby. Once again there is an exuberant freshness to the nose of plum, violet, peony, spice and earth aromas where a top note of kirsch is present. There is outstanding density and power to the big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors that deliver fine complexity on the caressing, sappy and harmonious finish. This too is lovely and should drink well a bit earlier than it normally does if that's your preference.

  • Tasting note: The intensely floral-suffused nose reveals notes of lavender, rose petal and lilac along with plenty of spice elements on the mostly dark berry fruit aromas. There is notably more volume to the equally pure medium weight plus flavors that positively vibrate with energy and minerality before culminating in a harmonious and beautifully well-balanced finale. The Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru 1999 is deep in color. It has a lovely savory bouquet with hints of Italian cured meats and bacon fat intermingling with briary scents, all with really impressive intensity. The palate is full-bodied and well balanced. There is clearly a bit of sinew here. Truffle and sappy black fruit form the second half with a saline note urging another sip toward the finish. This punches above my expectations, though I would be tempted to keep bottles down in the bunker for another three or four years. Like many 1999s, this is in for the long haul.

  • Tasting note: Discernible wood highlights the elegant, pure and highly spiced aromas of perfumed red pinot fruit that displays additional depth in the form of Gevrey style earth, floral and Asian-style tea notes. There is a softly exotic character to the mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that retain a fine sense of detail and intensity on the hugely long, complex and palate staining finish. This is a beautiful if firmly structured wine that is likely going to need between 12 and 15 years of cellar time to reveal its full, and considerable, potential.

  • A remarkably attractively cool and restrained nose of various red berries, spice and a beautiful array of floral elements complements well the rich and equally cool mineral-tinged big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors. There is a really lovely sense of underlying tension on the clean and pure finish that delivers strikingly good length. This intensely mineral-driven effort is also clean and firm but with slightly better phenolic maturity to the supporting structural elements which should allow this beauty to age successfully for many years to come. The tighter and much more mineral-driven big-bodied flavors also possess evident muscle on the powerful and dense yet beautifully refined finish that goes on and on. White Burgundy de Vogue 2017 Musigny Blanc

1 Case 12 75cl £9,900
  • Producer note: Resident enologist François Millet described the 2017 growing season as one "where we were seriously concerned about the possibility of another April frost damage nightmare. As it turned out the temperatures were low enough to cause injury to the new leaves but there wasn't the necessary humidity so we dodged a bullet. The rest of the season was relatively benign with a precocious flowering and warm if not scorching summer. As is often the case after a vintage where there is frost damage, the fruit set was abundant so we spent a lot of time controlling yields. We chose to begin picking on the 2nd of September under cool harvest conditions and brought in very clean fruit that required very little sorting. Yields were in the 30 to 35 hl/ha range where the potential alcohols averaged right at 13% so I chaptalized nothing. There was quite a bit of juice yet with reasonable solid to liquid ratios so I did not do a saignée. In the same spirit, I also chose to do no punching down at all as the grapes gave up their colors and extract easily. As to the wines, they're marked by their freshness and energy plus they have excellent transparency. I would put 2017 in the category of sunny and warm vintages such as 2009, 2000 and 1997 but importantly, 2017 has more concentration than any of those." Readers should be aware that as of 2015 the Musigny Blanc is once again being declared after having been declared as a Bourgogne Blanc since the 1994 vintage. Millet noted that the Musigny Blanc is raised in 20% new wood from the Tronçais forest. There are two parcels in both Grands and Petits Musigny measuring .67 ha and the dates of plantation are 1986, 1987, 1991 and 1997. Tasting note: A discreet touch of wood can be found on the overtly floral-infused aromas that display additional breadth in the form of Poire Williams (pear brandy), petrol and citrus zest. There is a touch of wood on the palate as well of the caressing large-scaled flavors that display an abundance of both dry extract and minerality on the impressively long and very dry finale that is a bit less youthfully austere than it usually is.

  • Tasting note: A completely different aromatic profile is present with its much earthier array of notably fresh red berries and discreet sauvage aromas. There is excellent richness to the muscular and full-bodied flavors that also possess fine mid-palate concentration that coats the mouth and helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the seamlessly proportioned finale. This very firmly structured effort is clearly going to require 15 to 20 years to arrive at its peak.

  • **Note: from a 2.7 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard** Not unexpectedly here the brooding and somber nose is completely different with a much greater emphasis on earth and smoked tea nuances on the darker hued fruit that includes cassis and black raspberry. The rich, powerful and impressively concentrated large-scaled flavors exhibit a sleek muscularity on the pure, balanced and gorgeously long finish. Like most of these 2010s, there is a serenity present here that allows the wines to unfold elegantly and coherently. This is a compact and quite forceful wine yet it delivers that power with no sense of weight or heaviness.

This is a big and overtly muscular wine with broad-shouldered and admirably concentrated flavors yet for all of the impressive size, weight and volume, the massively long finish is serene, even Zen-like. 2014 is a relatively seductive and forward vintage for this storied wine, and I appreciate that calling a wine "forward" when it will likely need 20 years to fully mature is a relative concept!

    Don't miss!
Note: from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard
Producer note: Resident enologist François Millet described the 2013 vintage as one that had a "very difficult spring with an equally poor flowering that produced a lot of shatter and a high incidence of shot berries. Somewhat curiously we had a very solid July and August, which in the last few vintages has been rare, but despite the clement conditions the maturities didn't really progress much. By contrast September was pretty much lousy and in particular the second half of it. The wet and humid conditions were perfect to allow rot to spread and to spread fast and we were really worried that we could have a serious problem. We chose to begin picking on the 5th of October and picked slowly until the 13th. While the general level of quality was quite high we did have to do significant sorting and I would put our sorting losses at around 10%. Between these losses and the poor flowering we wound up with a bit less overall yield than we obtained in 2012. With respect to the vinifications the fruit had a very high solid to liquid ratio so we had to be careful not to over exact the structural elements because it would have been easy to do. As to the wines, I love them because the terroir almost couldn't be any clearer. They are refreshing, intense and balanced and I think they're going to surprise a lot of people in the sense that such a difficult vintage could produce such beautiful wines. Moreover I believe that they will continue to put on weight as they age because the musts were actually denser than the wines seem to be now so all of that dry extract has to show up sooner or later." The 2012s, revisited below, are simply terrific and were bottled between February and March 2014 and have turned out even slightly better than I originally foresaw. (Chambers & Chambers Wine Merchants, www.chamberswines.com, San Francisco, CA, Country Vintner, www.countryvintner.com, Ashland, VA, Veritas Imports, www.veritaswine.com, CO/NM, Ideal Wines, www.idealwine.us, Boston MA, Atlanta Wholesale Wines, email david.forman@atlanta.com, GA, C'est Vin, LLC, 703/243-3559, Arlington, VA; Corney & Barrow, www.corneyandbarrow.com, and Dreyfus, Ashby & Co., www.dreyfusashby.com, both UK).
Tasting note: This is much more deeply pitched and even more reserved though aggressive swirling liberates a wonderfully complex array of plum and black raspberry liqueur-like aromas where added breadth is present in the form of spice, earth, pepper, dried flowers and a hint of underbrush. The dense, powerful and broad-shouldered flavors brim with dry extract that imparts a velvety mouth feel to the vibrant finale as well as pushes the very firm core of tannins to the background. This is a big but beautifully well-balanced wine that should amply reward up to 20 years of cellaring.

NMThis must be the first time that I have tasted the Bonnes-Mares from barrel and thought it could be mistaken for the Musigny! The 2013 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has an intense black pepper and blackberry bouquet, touches of mint and forest floor in the background, growing in intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with tensile and quite obdurate tannin, the acidity finely tuned and cutting through the surfacing blueberry and blackberry fruit. There is plenty of spice furnishing the finish and lingering long after the wine has departed, completing a seriously fine Bonnes-Mares that is stylish and intellectual.

This opulent yet very serious effort is also going to require a very long snooze in a very cool cellar but it should be a remarkable Musigny when it finally emerges. I would add that I don't know if this will be potentially one of the all-time great vintages for the de Vogüé Musigny but my guess is that it will at least be in the conversation, which given the historical track record of this wine, is no small compliment.

  • The 2009 Musigny Vieilles Vignes fleshes out beautifully with endless layers of fruit that caress the palate in stunning style. Sweet floral notes meld into expressive dark red fruit in this mysterious, evocative Burgundy. There is a weightless intensity to the Musigny that is achingly gorgeous. Waves of flavor continue to build towards the sexy, racy finish as the 2009 shows off its pedigree. The 2009 will always be an exuberant Musigny, but time in bottle will help shed some of the baby fat. This is likely to be a great, great wine for several decades.
