  • 2019 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru

    The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru comes from purchased fruit and includes 30% whole cluster. It has an attractive bouquet of red plum, blood orange and a light tang of seaweed. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins and fine acidity. Fleshy and ripe with a touch of white pepper on the finish. Good body and weight. This is quite a "gutsy" Clos Prieur with good substance.

  • Tasting note: A pungently earthy nose also offers supporting aromas of gentle wood, spice and both red and dark fruit components. There is excellent richness and body to the large-scaled, mineral-inflected and openly powerful flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract before terminating in a striking long finish. This is a robust and very serious effort that possesses excellent cellaring potential and note well that it will need it as this is presently a bruiser. 93/100

  • Tasting note: A tight and while not completely closed, it would be fair to describe as the nose of subtly layered and spicy dark currant aromas as highly restrained. By contrast, there is fine vibrancy and freshness to the silky and focused middle weight flavors that are shaped by fine grained if distinctly firm tannins, all wrapped in a wonderfully intense, mouth coating, impressively persistent and austere finish. This may be a Clos St. Denis of finesse but it doesn't lack for power or seriousness.

  • Tasting note: There is a bit more wood on the fresh and open sauvage-infused nose of both red and dark currant, earth and game hints. There is excellent volume to the very smooth and polished mid-palate of the broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of dry extract before culminating in a mineral-inflected, powerful and long finish. This moderately firm effort is supported by tannins that are ripe if borderline rustic. A classic Mazis.

  • Tasting note: In contrast to the prior two wines this is aromatically much more reserved though aggressive swirling eventually liberates Asian spice box, tea, plum and violet scents. There is fine richness to the very suave and highly seductive medium-bodied flavors thanks to the abundant amounts of dry extract that impart a sappy texture to the lingering and solidly complex finale. This is both classy and stylish and built to reward medium plus-term aging.

  • 2019 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru

    The 2019 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru contains around 30% whole cluster and is vinified in 500-liter barrels instead of open-top fermenters. It is very aromatic on the nose, presenting strong floral/peony aromas and touches of oyster shell and sea cave. The palate is well balanced with supple tannins and a slightly brutish finish compared to the Clos Vougeot.

  • 2019 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Beaune Cras 1er Cru

    The 2019 Beaune Cras 1er Cru has a very distinctive bouquet ,with granite, almost flinty aromas infusing the red berry fruit. A strong marine influence emerges with time. The palate is beautifully balanced, displaying fine delineation, good firm structure and a solid, quite edgy finish that feels crunchy in texture. Abundant freshness here. This Beaune should give 12–15 years’ drinking pleasure. Excellent.

Red Burgundy Vougeraie 2017 Musigny

  • A discreet touch of oak frames the intensely floral and exotically spiced nose reluctantly gives up its aromas of black cherry. The powerful, dense and imposingly-scaled flavors brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract that buffers the powerful, mouth coating and very firm tannic spine shaping the gorgeously long finish. This is a seriously impressive Musigny though one that is clearly meant for extended keeping.

    Note: from a tiny parcel of .17 ha; 100% whole clusters
    Producer note: Sylvie Poillot, who is the general manager of this now 44 ha domaine of which 70% of the production is in red, conducted this year's tasting. She noted that the amount of vines under production grew recently because they bought Maison Alex Gambal. Gambal's vines were already being farmed organically and thus there was no recertification necessary. With respect to the 2018 vintage, Poillot told me that "we began the harvest on the 23rd of August with our young vines. We then picked slowly and deliberately over the next 3 weeks. The fruit was basically spotless with good ripeness levels both in terms of sugars and phenolic maturities. Yields were generous and particularly so in chardonnay. We used variable amounts of whole clusters during the vinifications where we had no particular difficulties. As to the wines, they're certainly ripe but they offer reasonably good freshness and terroir transparency plus they should be approachable on the younger side." I would recommend many of the Vougeraie 2018s as they, when taken as a group, offer excellent quality. While the Musigny is almost always stunning, the Bonnes Mares transcends its usual level plus the portfolio of villages level wines also offer fine quality.     Tasting note: Not surprisingly this is less aromatically expressive today with its elegant and super-fresh if restrained array of various ripe dark berries, violet, lavender, exotic tea and impressive range of spices. There is equally good volume, power and muscle to the full-bodied flavors that brim with minerality on the explosively long and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is a very serious and stunningly good Musigny of lace and grace that is indisputably built-to-age so plenty of patience strongly advised. In a word, magnificent.
