Tasting Notes

Domaine Bonneau du Martray
Grand Cru Red 750 ml
Score: 92
Tasted: Apr 15, 2016
Drink: 2025+
Issue: 62
Note: from a 1.5 ha parcel in Le Charlemagne
Producer note: I will have Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière's broader views of the 2014 vintage in Issue 63. With respect to the red Corton, he noted that it was picked between the 17th and 19th of September with yields of around <26 hl/ha, which is around 25% less than is usual. He further noted that the fruit was quite clean as less than 3% of the fruit was eliminated and most of that was due to second generation berries that were not fully ripe. The total cuvaison lasted 18 days though unusually in the context of what was typical for most domaines in 2014, the malos did not finish until August 2015. Note the '13 was revisited below in bottle. Tasting note: This is riper than one might imagine for the vintage but importantly it retains a lovely sense of freshness on the brooding and reticent nose of black currant liqueur-like aromas that display background notes of spice, earth and game. There is a seductive mouth feel to the velvety and concentrated medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a dusty and long finish that exhibits a touch of asperity. This is perhaps best described as old school Corton but relatively refined old school Corton.
