  • Tasting note: The reduction is strong enough to push the fruit to the background but there is very good freshness and vibrancy to the broad-shouldered and notably ripe middle weight plus flavors that retain a good sense of underlying tension that adds lift to the very rich and lingering finish. This is a big but balanced wine that is more refined than the typical example of Morgeot. Worth considering.

Note: from purchased fruit on the Puligny side; sold under the Thierry Pillot label
Producer note: Thierry Pillot noted that 2011 is a "very precocious vintage that was extremely hot and dry early on before conditions deteriorated during the summer. The second half of August though was again quite warm and we decided to attack the harvest early as we had the proper phenolic ripeness if only average potential alcohol levels. Moreover we had begun to see the acid levels fall so we reasoned that there was just nothing further to be gained by waiting. We began picking on the 27th of August and brought in very clean fruit that required almost no sorting. I went with a very soft pressing so as not to extract any bitterness. The harvest conditions were quite warm and thus the fermentations started almost immediately. In terms of the élevage I did no lees stirring at all and used much less new wood, in fact in some cases none at all. As to the wines, they don't quite have the same purity as 2010 but the quality is almost as good."
Tasting note: This is also exotic though here it's notably more subtle with its notes of mandarin orange, yellow orchard fruit and spiced tea. There is imposing size and power to the broad-shouldered and sleekly muscular flavors that enjoy outstanding mid-palate concentration and plenty of mouth coating dry extract that also buffers the firm acidity that shapes the beautifully well-detailed and explosive finish. This is a full-on effort in that it remains refreshing and very well balanced.

  • Tasting note: A mild trace of reduction is enough to push the fruit to the background but I doubt that it will last; if you are tempted to try a bottle young simply decant it first. The lush and unusually full-bodied flavors in the context of what is typical for a villages level Puligny possess both fine volume and ample power while delivering excellent length on the impeccably well-balanced finale. This is a terrific effort and highly recommended.

  • Tasting note: A wafting and airy nose of honeysuckle, white fruit, including peach, pear and apple complements the dried floral notes and are in perfect keeping with the rich, full and palate staining medium weight flavors that are notably intense but perhaps a bit less elegant than usual. Still, this is impressive in its old vine intensity and sheer length. Interestingly, this is presently not as complex as the Chapelot is at the moment but there is even more material and I'm betting in time, this surpasses its stable mate. In passing, I mentioned to Raveneau how different the '06 and '07 versions were and he pointed out that in warm years, the east-facing exposition of Blanchots can have a tendency to create heavy wines [while simultaneously noting that the same exposition is a huge help in cool vintages] but that is certainly not the case here, indeed if anything, the finish is bone dry and the precision marvelous.

    Outstanding
Note: from a huge parcel of 2.5 ha though this figure includes the surface area in Chapelot
Producer note: Bernard Raveneau called the 2008 vintage an "unending series of surprises. We had snow at the end of March with the flowering occurring around June 20th. The summer was quite cool and August was wet instead of dry. It's a good thing that September was not too hot and dry with a steady north wind or we would have been overrun with rot problems. Then, of all things, we actually had a bit of frost in September though it was not enough to really hurt anything. We began picking on the 29th of September and the crop was really quite clean with fine sugars averaging between 12.5 and 13.2%, which means there was no chaptalization for any of our wines. 2008 is definitely marked by its lively acidity as there was plenty of malic and while the malos were long, they were not troubled. As to the wines, 2008 is clearly at least a very good vintage and they remind me a bit of the 1996s but with better concentration, which hopefully will mean that they age better too." Speaking of longer malos, Raveneau explained that the Vaillons was still completing its secondary fermentation and thus is not reviewed below. As I explained last year, fans of the Domaine are not seeing things because there really is a new wine in the range. 2007 was the first vintage for a villages level Chablis located near the 1er Montmains. Lastly, the Raveneau 2007s are brilliant wines and very much worth your attention. (Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, www.kermitlynch.com, Berkeley, CA; John Armit Wines, www.armit.co.uk and Haynes, Hanson & Clark, www.hhandc.co.uk, both UK).
Tasting note: This offers a step up in aromatic elegance with acacia blossom, quinine, citrus peel and sea shore aromas that are framed by a gentle touch of wood, which is also reflected by the intense, powerful and quite serious big-bodied flavors that ooze dry extract that confers a silky and sappy mouth feel to the seductive and long finish. Still, this will require at least 6 to 8 years to really be at its best and it should live for years after that.

  • Tasting note: The benefit of the older vines is apparent as this is notably more complex than either the Forêts or the Montmains with its broad-ranging nose of subtle wood, green fruit, citrus, tidal pool, wet stone and saline notes where the salt and mineral elements continue onto the detailed, intense and exceptionally pure flavors that ooze Chablis character on the palate staining and impeccably balanced finish. One to strongly consider.

  • Tasting note: An exceptionally fresh and ever-so-mildly tropical nose offers plenty of classic Chablis character that includes sea breeze and oyster shell notes. There is good richness and verve to the nicely rich and solidly well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that possess good detail and really lovely depth on the focused, long and delicious finish. As Chapelots often is, this is softer and not quite as impressive as the '08 Montée de Tonnerre (see herein) though the resemblance is striking (Chapelots is one of the climats of Montée de Tonnerre). For my taste this is just about ready though one more year of cellar time should help to add depth; that said, this could certainly be drunk now with pleasure.

  • Tasting note: Here too there is just a background hint of wood that does not intrude upon the wonderfully refined aromas that are airy, pure and lacy and exhibit largely the same components as the Montée de Tonnerre. The detailed and equally pure flavors are unusually forward with fine intensity and superb finishing length and minerality. I like the high level of extract and overall sense of balance.

  • Tasting note: Here too the admirably pure aromas are distinctly cool with its ripe nose of white peach and essence of pear that is trimmed in notes of subtle wood, spice and citrus zest. Once again there is fine volume to the solidly concentrated and sappy medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate complexity and persistence on the balanced finale. A classic Charmes.

  • Tasting note: This is slightly riper than is typical for a fine Perrières with a wonderfully refined nose of white and yellow orchard fruit with particular emphasis on apricot and white peach. The seductively rich and mineral-driven flavors possess a fine sense of volume and excellent length if not quite the same overall depth as the Referts. Still, this is lovely and should reward 7 to 9 years of cellar time.

  • Tasting note: This is also unusually expressive while exhibiting very subtle hints of exotic orange pekoe tea on the beautifully fresh nose of dried fruits that include apricot, white peach and acacia blossom. There is an opulent and caressing mouth feel to the very rich and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract before terminating in a delicious, mineral-driven and impressively long finish. This is rich to the point of succulence and while it will certainly age well this will be approachable much earlier than usual.

  • 2012 Domaine Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet Champ Gain

(just the second vintage at Sauzet for this recently purchased parcel): Pale, bright yellow. Pear, peach, hazelnut and white flowers on the expressive nose. Then tactile and energetic in the mouth, with flavors of fresh hazelnut and dried fruits nicely framed by lemony acidity. Very upright, pure wine with a long, dry finish. Still a bit youthfully compressed and in need of a couple years of patience.

  • Tasting note: Soft reduction takes the top notes off of what appears to be elegant and complex aromas of white flower, citrus rind and wet stone. Like the nose, the detailed, intense and tension-filled middle weight flavors exude a fine minerality on the highly vibrant, delicious and wonderfully well-balanced finish. This distinctly linear effort is really lovely and built to reward up to a decade of cellar time.

  • Tasting note: Here the surprisingly expressive nose is even more complex with broad-ranging aromas of various floral and white fleshed fruit scents that also display top notes of spice, all of which is again framed in discreet oak hints. This is a big Bâtard where the broad-shouldered flavors brim with palate soaking dry extract that does a fine job of effectively buffering the very firm acid spine that keeps everything in balance on the opulently textured and hugely long finish. Moreover this is strikingly complex, indeed it rivals the Montrachet for being the most complex wine in the range.

  • Tasting note: A measured dollop of wood does not impede the appreciation of the floral and earth-inflected white orchard fruit-scented nose. There is better volume and mid-palate density to the attractively punchy and powerful middle weight flavors that display a mild touch of rusticity on the impressively complex and persistent finale. This pretty and softly stony effort should benefit from 4 to 7 years of cellaring.
