  • Tasting note: This is also quite ripe but less overtly so and remains notably more elegant with its expressive nose of honeysuckle, acacia blossom, pear and apple aromas. In accordance with the superior freshness, there is a bit more energy as well with a solid acid spine shaping the delicious and extract-rich medium weight plus flavors that possess excellent density on the vibrant, mouth coating and strikingly long finish. In a word, terrific.

  • Tasting note: A highly restrained nose requires considerable swirling to liberate the beautifully well-layered aromas of mineral reduction, white rose, spice, citrus and a wisp of exotic tea. Like the Pucelles there is excellent richness and detail and much more minerality-suffusing the almost painfully intense finale that is breathtaking in its persistence. This is a gem of a Puligny 1er and in 2016 is a lovely blend of power and finesse. In sum, this is a knockout.

  • Tasting note: A ripe and classic nose of distinctly discreet and reserved green fruit and floral aromas that are airy, pure and lightly spiced merge into intense, precise and penetrating medium full flavors blessed with terrific acid/fruit balance and huge length. This is really a lovely wine that is presently a tightly coiled spring and in need of extended bottle aging to really put on display the superb potential here. An understated stunner of a wine as well as ultra refined and one of the best examples of this appellation in 2005.

  • Producer note: Stéphane Arbelet and Philippe Prost, Bouchard's managing director and winemaker respectively, noted that 2008 "presented many challenges climactically speaking. Depending on the sector, there was heavy rain, hail, wide temperature swings and various kinds of rot. We began picking in the Côte de Beaune on the 24th of September with the pinot and because of the cool and dry conditions, we were able to harvest the chardonnay slowly and deliberately, in fact we did not finish until the 6th of October. The chardonnay was healthy and quite clean and while there was some sorting required, it was minimal. The yields in tonnage were lower than in 2007 but because of the dehydrating effects of the persistent north wind, the realized yield in juice was much lower. Ripeness levels were generally very good though they did vary by sector and particularly by altitude. In terms of the wines, they have everything they need to be very long lived, which is to say vibrant acidity, ample concentration and exceptional freshness." Both Arbelet and Prost were exceptionally high on the quality of their '08 whites and their enthusiasm was born out by the quality of what I saw here.     Tasting note: This is also wonderfully elegant with high-toned, pure and airy aromas of white flower, light toast, spiced pear and a hint of green apple that gives way to supple yet detailed mineral-suffused middle weight flavors that are perhaps even more refined than those of the Perrières, all wrapped in a balanced, stylish and lingering finish. As good as this is, and it is very good, it's not necessarily leagues better than its junior partner, just different though it will most likely require a few more years to reach its apogee.

    Producer note: Philippe Prost, Bouchard's winemaker, did not hold back when he called the 2012 vintage "the most difficult vintage that I have ever had to vinify primarily because of the wildly variable weather patterns we had in the Côte during the growing season. We had everything from perfect fruit to compromised fruit and when the fruit was compromised, it was compromised in different ways. It is of course possible to rigorously sort and of course we do that at Bouchard but even so it doesn't necessarily mean that the quality of your raw materials isn't going to vary from one terroir to another. And it is this aspect that I personally found so challenging, which is basically another way of saying that it was necessary to try to evaluate how good those specific raw materials were and then adapt your vinification strategy to that vision. Moreover, we were concerned that the picking dates weren't going to follow their normal progression as we were afraid that we might have a free fall in acidity among certain of our better white wine terroirs. As it turned out, that wasn't at all the case but the problem is that you don't know that in advance so you have to try and prepare for anything and everything. Another prime example of modifying your strategy according to your assessment of the raw materials is that we almost never destem our whites yet in 2012 we decided to remove about 30% of them so as to potentially avoid having vegetal aromas and flavors. [Bouchard did this in 2011 as well.] Most of the vinifications for the white went as they should though we did have a few of them that had difficulty finishing the sugars though in the end everything finished completely dry. One thing that we did not change though is our policy of doing zero lees stirring because it seemed clear from the beginning that the 2012s were going to rich and full-bodied. As to the wines it's interesting because I am much more enthusiastic today about the whites than I was initially. They were good but didn't seem to have that spark and extra-dimension that makes great white burgundy great. Then little by little during the élevage process they awoke and today I really like them. In terms of other vintage comparisons I might suggest a slightly more acidic 1992 or a more concentrated version of 2004." Prost noted that the production of whites in 2012 was off about 30% which is roughly what Bouchard produced in 2010. The 2012s were bottled between July and December 2013.     Tasting note: A reserved nose is pure, cool and airy with its notes of spiced pear, citrus blossom and mineral reduction. There is genuinely striking intensity to the gorgeously detailed medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the driving and explosively persistent finish. This is a very powerful and concentrated effort that should offer terrific upside development potential and easily last for two decades.

    Producer note: Winemaker Frédéric Weber spent plenty of time discussing the nuances of the 2014 vintage and growing season, noting that "the winter was very mild, in fact we had the warmest one since 1900. Not surprisingly the vegetative cycle began very early and a cool north wind made sure that the vines suffered no disease pressure. The early June flowering passed without incidence and there was a relatively abundant fruit set. Throughout the month of June we were dreaming of the possibility of making another 1999 and then the 28th arrived with the widespread hailstorm and all such thoughts were instantly destroyed along with a great deal of the potential crop. In 2013 we lost about one-third of the potential crop whereas in 2014 it was more in the range of 40 to 45%. In fact it was the smallest crop here at Bouchard since 2003. In early July the direction of the wind changed from the north to the southwest and lousy weather followed the winds except for a few days that were so hot that some parcels suffered sun burned fruit. Happily the second half of August and virtually all of September changed once again for the better and conditions were not only near-perfect but again there was virtually no disease pressure because the small amount of rot that developed in August was dried by the prevailing north wind. It also helped that there weren't many berries on each bunch so the fruit was well-aerated. We chose to begin picking the pinot on the 11th of September but waited until the 14th to attack the chardonnay. The chardonnay was impeccably clean and potential alcohols were in the 12 to 13.5% range with good acid levels. In contrast to the relatively quick malos for the pinot, those for the chardonnay were extended. As is our usual practice we did zero bâtonnage and we used no new wood whatsoever. As to the style of the 2014 whites, they remind me a great deal of the 2008s which in my book is an excellent compliment." Weber noted that the villages wines were bottled in September 2015 followed by the 1ers in November and the grands crus in December. (Henriot, Inc., www.henriotinc.com, NY, NY; John E.     Tasting note: This presently has the same nose as the Corton-Charlemagne as it's both reduced and mildly woody though I would not expect this to persist beyond the first few years as the reduction is not heavy. There is once again outstanding volume and concentration as well as impressive size, weight and richness to the highly seductive big-bodied flavors that possess a plenitude of dry extract that both coats the palate and buffers the firm acid spine shaping the gorgeously long and well-balanced finale. In 2014 this more resembles Montrachet than Chevalier and I would make the same observation here that I made with the Corton-Charlemagne and Chevalier that while this should amply reward extended cellaring it is not so backward that it shouldn't drink well after 6 to 8 years.

  • The 2016 Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte Grand Cru has a similar bouquet to the regular Chevalier-Montrachet this year, albeit with a subtle oyster shell scent that surfaces with time. The palate is very poised and a little nuttier and more saline than the regular bottling, although for me it does not quite deliver the same precision right on the finish. It is a bit broody at the moment and maybe closer in style to the Montrachet. Three barrels produced (since the vines were less affected by frost).

    (just two barrels produced, vs. a normal three or four; almost finished with its malolactic fermentation): Pale, bright yellow. Musky, deeply pitched aromas of smoky oak and Montrachet-like iodiney minerality (La Cabotte is the northeastern section of Chevalier-Montrachet, which was part of Montrachet until early in the 20th century). Big, rich and deep, with savory minerality currently dominating ripe stone fruits. This very tactile, salty wine may be less energetic in the early going than the "regular" Chevalier-Montrachet but then it's in more of a Montrachet style, like the 2015 version: large-scaled but quite dry and classic and not expressive today. Also more tannic on the back end, and still with a malic note of spiced apple, along with an intriguing suggestion of peony remaining in the empty glass.

    Producer note: Véronique Drouhin noted that the 2014 growing season "wasn't as difficult as that of 2013 but with the hail in the Côte de Beaune and the Suzukii flies in the Côte de Nuits it didn't lack for challenges. The season began propitiously with an almost summer-like spring that turned into an autumnal-like summer that was then followed by a summer-like fall. It was a rather curious succession of different kinds of weather that was punctuated by the late June hailstorm that was thankfully early enough that it had more impact on quantity than quality. We began picking on the 11th of September and the sorting requirements varied by parcel but very generally the fruit was pretty clean so there was less overall sorting than usual. We modified our use of whole cluster between none in the Côte de Beaune due to the hail to around 25% in the Côte de Nuits. I believe that our decision to attack the harvest a few days earlier paid dividends as the whites have better acidity than usual but not too much. Moreover while many observers seem fixated by how good the whites are, which in fairness they are excellent, but I believe that the quality of the reds is grossly underestimated. They have everything they need to also be very fine and while 2014 is not a genuinely great vintage for the reds, it's at least very good to excellent. A few years from now I think collectors are going to be very surprised by just how good they are." I noted in Issue 62 that I was extremely impressed by the quality of the Drouhin reds and I would make the same observation about their 2014 whites and this is true from the entry level wines to the very top of the range.     Tasting note: A completely different aromatic profile is present here with its smoky array of earth, resin and various white orchard fruit scents. On the palate it's immediately clear that this is a big wine with impressive mid-palate concentration and overt power that continues onto the mouth coating and balanced finish that is very solidly structured. This won't win any awards for elegance but it absolutely avoids the heaviness that Morgeot can often display. Moderate patience required.

    Producer note: I met this time with enologist and winemaker Jérôme Faure-Brac as well as Véronique Drouhin who collectively noted that the 2015 growing season "wasn't nearly as difficult as the prior seasons and particularly so with our parcels in the Côte de Beaune. You had to be really careful pruning the vines as the accumulated effects from three consecutive years of hail in the Côte de Beaune had made many of them quite fragile. We also had significantly different yields as they were normal in the Côte de Nuits but quite low in the Côte de Beaune. One of the really nice things about the vintage is how clean the fruit was and given that the harvest weather was so clement we could basically pick each parcel when we felt it was ready, a luxury that isn't always available. We were also super-vigilant about the pressing as we absolutely wanted to avoid the higher pHs that typically result from using the press juice. As such we vinified it separately and then, depending on the characteristics of the press wine, we incorporated it or, if we didn't like it, we sold it. We also did no lees stirring because it was clear from the beginning that the whites were going to be very rich. One of the interesting aspects of this vintage is how much the wines have changed over time as initially they seemed almost heavy and a bit flat at first but as the élevage progressed, they tightened up and actually became fresher and more focused. At that point we said that there was nothing further to be gained from keeping the wines in cask so we bottled the entire range between December 2016 and February 2017." I found the quality of the Drouhin 2015 whites to be generally better than what I found on balance elsewhere.     Tasting note: Here the nose is quite firmly reduced so be sure to decant it if you're yearning to try a bottle upon release. On the plus side there is a really lovely texture to the elegant and vibrant medium weight flavors that possess very fine complexity on the highly persistent finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth.

    The 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot (Marquis de Laguiche) was affected by the frost, and hence 50% of the fruit was lost. The nose is pleasant with scents of white peach and citrus lemon, although it does not quite have the vigor of the Embasees. The palate is well balanced with a ripe, sorbet-fresh entry of orange and pear, quite energetic toward the finish that fans out in confident fashion. This gets better with acquaintance and deserves a couple of years once in bottle.

The lavishly rich, muscular and overtly powerful flavors possess the hallmark minerality that carries over to the dense, citrusy and very dry finish. This beauty should age effortlessly. Don't miss!

    The 2017 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos is potentially the finest of Fèvre's 2017s, offering up notes of citrus oil, confit lemon, beeswax and sweet white flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, glossy and rich, with a deep, firm core and chewy extract, balanced by juicy acids. It's a powerful, complete Les Clos that's built for the long haul.

  • Tasting note: A gorgeously elegant if highly restrained nose of citrus, acacia blossom and pungent wet stone aromas trimmed in just enough wood to notice is stunning. Not surprisingly, the medium-bodied flavors are much finer than those of the Bâtard or Corton-Charlemagne though not quite as big or powerful. The strikingly intense, lingering and impeccably well-balanced finish radiates minerality and the overall sense of harmony is flat out superb. A knockout, even by the incredible standards of this wine.

  • (13.9% natural alcohol, from vines on the Chassagne side): Bright, pale yellow. Knockout pure nose offers discreet notes of stone fruits, clove and iodiney minerality. At once powerful and vibrant in the mouth, offering great volume, depth and lift to its palate-staining spice and mineral flavors. The iodiney quality carries through to the very long, precise finish. Wonderfully juicy and energetic considering that it's carrying a moderate four grams of acidity. This should evolve gracefully in bottle for a decade or more.

  • Tasting note: An absolutely stunning nose features notes of oak toast, a wonderfully broad array of spice elements, both of which add breadth to the citrus and floral infused white orchard fruit aromas. As is often the case with this wine, it is built on its minerality with very fine intensity to the medium weight plus flavors that also culminate in an impressively long but still quite compact finish. The linear backend is clearly in need of time to flesh out but the underlying material is clearly here to allow that to happen. Moreover, one of the genuinely wonderful aspects of this wine in 2012 is the textured, pure and effortlessly stylish mouth feel. In short, this is stunning.

  • Tasting note: This is also quite elegant with its equally spicy nose of honeysuckle, yellow and white orchard fruit and citrus elements. There is a lovely vibrancy to the concentrated and relatively large-scaled flavors that possess good power on the markedly dry and somewhat compact edgy finish. As with the Combettes my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that the finish will flesh out and the dryness will dissipate with time.

    Producer note: **All Wines Labeled as Cuvée Spéciale. Patrick Javillier explained that 2009 achieved “basically perfect maturity. We began picking on the 6th of September and brought in perfectly clean fruit with potential alcohols that ranged from 12.8 to 13.3%. Total acidities were normal but the pHs were relatively low. As such the wines are perfectly balanced with no heaviness and they not only have more flesh than the ‘08s but they have especially long finishes.” I found the Javillier ‘09s to be just as good as his amazing ‘08s and while the styles of the respective vintages are different, it’s hard to choose a qualitative winner. In short, both 2008 and 2009 are terrific vintages chez Javillier. I will repeat what I said about his ‘08s and apply it to his ‘09s: They are genuinely brilliant, particularly at the villages and regional wine levels. In fact, I would go so far as to say that there is quite simply no one in Burgundy producing better regional or villages level wines across the board.

    Tasting note: Here the nose is riper still and while it is overtly exotic, there is no hint of surmaturité. The flavors are viscous in fact there is a borderline oily quality as there is so much extract present that this is almost thick yet, almost incongruously, this is not at all ponderous or cumbersome. As one might imagine with so much extract, this is a distinctly powerful and intense wine that completely coats the palate on the hugely long finish. While this is a dramatic, even imposing wine, it is less elegant than usual but fans of power white burgundy cannot fail to appreciate it.

  • Tasting note: There is a subtle whiff of exoticism to the elegant and ultra-fresh aromas of honeysuckle, tangerine skin, pear compote and spice. Once again there is a terrific sense of energy to the racy, intense and gorgeously refined middle weight flavors that culminate in a highly refined, balanced and sneaky long finale. This is textbook Pucelles that should age effortlessly.

  • Tasting note: A ripe yet cool and airy nose is comprised by notes of green apple, citrus zest, pear and once again, plenty of floral influence. The notably rich and generously proportioned flavors exude both minerality and salinity on the beautifully complex finale. Despite the richness the mid-palate mouth feel is actually based more on finesse and refinement than usual. Excellent.
