Easily my favorite in the retrospective, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape la Reserve Secrete (60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, aged mostly in small barrels) flirts with perfection and is a heavenly Chateauneuf du Pape that I wish every reader could taste. Possessing off-the-hook complexity in its ripe dark fruits, garrigue, tobacco, olive and cigar-laced aromas and flavors, this beauty is full-bodied, gorgeously concentrated and layered, with fine, elegant tannin and a blockbuster finish. Possessing both elegance and power, it's a quintessential Chateauneuf du Pape that's drinking at point!

The regular Cote Rotie is a 10,000-bottle cuvee aged in barrique (of which 30% is new), with 15% stems utilized during the fermentation. It enjoys a cold maceration in barrel, a technique common in both Burgundy and Cote Rotie, and recently implemented in Bordeaux. The sexy, friendly 2000 Cote Rotie is one of the vintage’s finest examples. A deep ruby color is followed by sweet, expansive aromas of black fruits, white flowers, pepper, and spice box. With low acidity, gorgeously textured, plump flavors, and an easygoing, sensual finish, it can be drunk now and over the next decade.

Rhone Ogier, Michel & Stephane 2009 Cote Rotie Belle Helene 1 Case 6 75cl £1,500
  • Opaque purple. Deeply pitched aromas of cherry pit, blackberry, licorice and woodsmoke. Broad, palate-coating dark fruit flavors show liqueur-like depth and power, with by slow-building minerality providing lift. Very rich but surprisingly lithe, with strong finishing thrust and harmonious tannins that add grip. This impressively powerful, well-balanced wine should age slowly.
