Tasting note: A ripe yet cool and wonderfully fresh nose is composed of mostly red berry fruit, discreet spice and earth, all of which is trimmed in an extremely subtle touch of oak. There is fine delineation and plenty of minerality on the utterly delicious middle weight flavors that are perhaps a bit less powerful than one might expect in the context of the vintage on the impeccably well-balanced and gorgeously long finish. This is a wonderfully harmonious effort that is very much still on the way up but among the 3 Rousseau "big boys", this is the closest one to being able to enjoy now. That said, another 5 to 8 years will certainly return benefits.

  • Understated and very pure on the nose: pure crushed strawberry and Morello on the nose. Wonderful definition. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, harmonious, sensual, poised on the finish with hints of orange zest and apricot. This may merit an even higher score in the future. Tasted February 2011.

Bright medium red. Precise, perfumed aromas of raspberry, cherry, minerals, spices and flowers; seems less oaky today than the Clos des Ruchottes despite the fact that it began in 60% new oak. Densely packed, sappy and aromatic, with the sweet oak component supporting the red fruit and spice flavors. The very long, slowly building finish really perfumes the palate and lingers with great vigor.

  • Producer note: Eric Rousseau's take on the 2010 vintage was "almost every aspect was marked by the weather and most of it wasn't favorable. The night of the 19th of December 2009 had a 15° C drop in just a few hours that caused the sap in the vines to freeze, expand and ultimately kill many vines. We certainly had some of our villages vineyards hit relatively hard. Then the weather was cool and wet during the flowering which caused a lot of shot berries to materialize, which of course was the major driver of the lower yields. In fact we had the lowest yields in 2010 that we have had during the entire decade and I include 2003 in that comparison. Our yields varied between 20 and 30 hl/ha but on the other hand, it is almost a certainty that without the low crop levels we never would have had sufficiently ripe fruit. I didn't wait very long to begin picking and began on the 22nd of September and picked until October 2nd. There was some sorting work for under ripe berries but really no more than usual. Sugars were very good and ranged from 12 to 13.5%. The harvest weather was also very cool and it took a bit longer to get the fermentations to begin but after that I did my normal vinification. Right after the fermentations were finished the temperatures fell even further which means that the cellars cooled off earlier than usual. This had the effect of delaying the onset of the malos and since there was a lot of malic acid, the malos were long and slow. I don't know about elsewhere but here at the domaine 2010 is a really beautiful vintage. There is tension and verve to the wines and they make me think of the 2008s but with better density and riper tannins. And unlike the 2008s, I don't think that the 2010s will close up once they're in bottle." As to the now in-bottle '09s, they confirmed the seriously impressive quality that they displayed at this time last year. But as good as they are, and they are sensational, the Rousseau '10s are also amazing, in particular the Chambertin which is utterly brilliant. Rousseau noted that he used no new wood at all except for the Clos St. Jacques, Chambertin and Clos de Bèze. (Frederick Wildman, www.frederickwildman.com, NY, NY; Berry Brothers & Rudd, www.bbr.com, The Wine Society, www.thewinesociety.com, O.W. Loeb, www.owloeb.com, The Rare & Fine Wine Company Limited, www.therareandfinewinecompany.com, and Justerini & Brooks, www.justerinis.com, all UK).
Tasting note: This is also ultra-pure and densely fruited with notes of anise, mint, wet stone and a sauvage hint that introduces intensely earthy and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that are rich, powerful, serious and densely concentrated, all wrapped in a silky, palate staining, explosive and colossally persistent finish. This is actually relatively expressive and approachable for a young Cham yet the balance and harmony is present for this to age for decades. A brilliant effort and one of the best vintages ever for this justifiably revered wine.

  • Tasting note: A potently expressive nose blends both wood and natural spice together with distinctly cool, pure and ripe wild red berries, earth and underbrush. The palate impression is a gorgeous combination of power and refinement along with flat out superb complexity on the explosively long, focused and beautifully well-balanced finish. The supporting structure is dense but fine and this should prove to be a moderately long-lived example.

"A highly spiced and exceptionally fresh, ripe and airy nose mixes a wide variety of mostly red berry fruit aromas though there are background notes of plum, cassis, lavender and oak. The broad-shouldered flavors possess a seductive texture thanks to the copious amounts of dry extract that push the very firm tannic spine to the background. I very much like the concentration here as well as the vibrancy and this is very, very dry in the best sense of the term, indeed it is presently almost crisp yet the very dense supporting tannins are clearly quite ripe. This should be a fantastic Bèze in time and eventually the 2012 could rank among the great vintages for this storied wine." Burghound

  • Tasting note: A beautifully elegant essence of red berry fruit nose enjoys added breadth in the form of spice, earth and gentle floral nuances. I very much like the sense of freshness and vivacity to the medium weight plus flavors that possess fine detail and a hint of minerality that continues onto the silky and saline-inflected finish. This wine has made a great deal of progress over the past 5 vintages or so and 2012 continues that trend.

  • Tasting note: A pretty and more expressive nose features elegant aromas of assorted red berries, newly turned earth and a lovely floral note, all of which is trimmed in a whisper of oak. There is excellent volume and plenty of punch to the mouth coating and intense medium weight plus flavors that possess plenty of dry extract that coats the palate and imparts a seductive, even silky texture to the balanced, complex and lingering finish. A Charmes of refinement but should drink well both young and old.

The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques is the only cru that underwent some chaptalization this year – a modest 0.5 degrees alcohol. It has an elegant bouquet with dark plum and redcurrant scents, freshly tilled soil and woodland surfacing with aeration. The palate has a sweet entry and a pleasant, slightly grainy texture, though it does not quite deliver the finesse of the Morey Charmes. Still, this is a thoroughly decent Gevrey premier cru. Drink 2015-2023.

Producer note: Chantal Tortochot, who directs this biologically farmed 11 ha domaine, described 2012 as a "tiny vintage where yields were off fully 40% due mostly to a poor flowering that provoked a high incidence of shatter and shot berries. We made an amazing 21 treatments against mildew alone because it was constantly wet. All of the rain made treating the vines all the more difficult because it was a challenge just to get the machinery into the vineyards. In fact we did the last couple of treatments manually with the scuba diver-like tanks that you carry on your back! July was thankfully warm and sunny though we had one 10 day period of very hot weather that sunburned some of the exposed bunches and that cost us some yield as well. Suffice it to say that it was necessary to thoroughly sort but what we were left with was superb, indeed about as good as I have seen in terms of the raw materials. I like the wines a lot as they're ripe, concentrated and serious though not so much so that they won't be approachable young if that's what clients want." I was very impressed with the quality of the Tortochot 2012s, revisited below, in particular at the lower levels of the range. Tortochot noted that her 2012s were bottled between September 2013 and March 2014. The Tortochot wines are generally relatively old school in terms of style and structure though they do evidence noticeable wood when the wines are young. Tasting note: There is a plenitude of sauvage character to the earth and tea-infused aromas of red berry, dark currant and humus scents. This is also seductively textured but notably more powerful as the big-bodied, intense and more obviously mineral-inflected flavors possess positively huge length on the strikingly complex finale. This is a seriously structured effort but there is so much mid-palate sap that it should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of cellaring.

  • Tasting note: This too is overtly sauvage in character but otherwise the aromatic profile is somewhat different with more obvious floral and spice elements adding a touch of refinement to the red and dark berry aromas that are again trimmed in enough wood to notice. There is fine delineation and focused power to the broad-shouldered and imposingly scaled flavors that brim with both minerality and mouth coating sap, all wrapped in a gorgeously long if quite youthfully austere finish. This is old school but not hard and should make for wonderful old bones if you have the patience to wait.

  • Tasting note: This possesses an intensely floral nose with its equally cool and restrained array of rose, lavender and violet scents that add elegance to the distinctly spicy and earthy red and dark berry fruit scents that are also tinged by herbal tea nuances. There is excellent volume to the fleshy yet well-detailed and explicitly powerful big-bodied flavors that exhibit excellent power on the palate staining and hugely long finish. This intensely mineral-driven effort is most impressive but again note well that I would recommend buying this only if you have the requisite patience to cellar it accordingly as it's absolutely going to need it. As an aside it's going to be very interesting to see over time which wine among these three grands crus is ultimately the most interesting.

  • (opened from personal storage). This has continued its upward development while still maintaining its superb aromatic density with still relatively primary aromas of blueberries, earth and animale notes. There is good power and concentation to the intense yet refined flavors that are underpinned by a firm but ripe tannic spine on the wonderfully long finish. This is developing beautifully and while there are still a few more years of unrealized upside potential in store, this is not so far away that it would be a vinous crime to open a bottle now. In a word, gorgeous.

    Don't miss!
Tasting note: This is also quite reserved at present with an elegant, airy, cool and pure nose that is kaleidoscopically complex as it offers red currant, plum, black cherry and a panoply of floral and spice notes, in particular violet and anise, before marrying seamlessly into mineral-driven and alluring big-bodied flavors that explode on the powerful and almost painfully intense finish that delivers genuinely stunning length. I love the way Musigny can so effortlessly combine a silky palate impression with serious muscle. This should be quite impressive in time though note that it will need a minimum of 18 to 25 years of cellar time.

  • Tasting note: A strikingly layered nose of cassis flowers, black cherry, spice, stone and violets serves as a stunning introduction to the cool, restrained and highly vibrant medium-bodied flavors where the transparency is something to see as this is positively crystalline. The lilting and caressing flavors glide across the palate yet there is an explosiveness to the finish that is almost unexpected. Lovely juice that is fashioned in an understated and altogether classy style.

  • **Note: from a 2.7 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard** Not unexpectedly here the brooding and somber nose is completely different with a much greater emphasis on earth and smoked tea nuances on the darker hued fruit that includes cassis and black raspberry. The rich, powerful and impressively concentrated large-scaled flavors exhibit a sleek muscularity on the pure, balanced and gorgeously long finish. Like most of these 2010s, there is a serenity present here that allows the wines to unfold elegantly and coherently. This is a compact and quite forceful wine yet it delivers that power with no sense of weight or heaviness.

  • A remarkably attractively cool and restrained nose of various red berries, spice and a beautiful array of floral elements complements well the rich and equally cool mineral-tinged big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors. There is a really lovely sense of underlying tension on the clean and pure finish that delivers strikingly good length. This intensely mineral-driven effort is also clean and firm but with slightly better phenolic maturity to the supporting structural elements which should allow this beauty to age successfully for many years to come. • Deep ruby. This is also quite floral yet the character of it is from whiter flowers than those of the Amoureuses. In addition there is good ripeness but also fine freshness to the plum, black cherry, cassis and blueberry aromas. The supple but tautly muscular medium weight plus flavors possess a suave mouth feel thanks to the abundant dry extract that both coats the palate and buffers the very firm tannic spine on the highly persistent finish. There is a pungently earthy character to the broad-shouldered, intense and muscular flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins before concluding in a powerful and persistent if not especially complex finish.
