  • Maison Leroy release: Bricked completely through to the center. Despite the total bricking, there is still a sense of freshness to the wonderfully spicy and expressive nose that is now largely dominated by sous bois-infused aromas and this sense of vibrancy continues onto the minerally and beautifully detailed flavors that finish with first rate complexity and excellent length. If there is a nit, it's that the is a very subtle touch of dryness that does not pose a problem over the next few years but probably will in time. This is a really impressive effort that is very Vosne in character. Tasted three times with consistent results.

  • Producer note: Eric Rousseau's take on the 2010 vintage was "almost every aspect was marked by the weather and most of it wasn't favorable. The night of the 19th of December 2009 had a 15° C drop in just a few hours that caused the sap in the vines to freeze, expand and ultimately kill many vines. We certainly had some of our villages vineyards hit relatively hard. Then the weather was cool and wet during the flowering which caused a lot of shot berries to materialize, which of course was the major driver of the lower yields. In fact we had the lowest yields in 2010 that we have had during the entire decade and I include 2003 in that comparison. Our yields varied between 20 and 30 hl/ha but on the other hand, it is almost a certainty that without the low crop levels we never would have had sufficiently ripe fruit. I didn't wait very long to begin picking and began on the 22nd of September and picked until October 2nd. There was some sorting work for under ripe berries but really no more than usual. Sugars were very good and ranged from 12 to 13.5%. The harvest weather was also very cool and it took a bit longer to get the fermentations to begin but after that I did my normal vinification. Right after the fermentations were finished the temperatures fell even further which means that the cellars cooled off earlier than usual. This had the effect of delaying the onset of the malos and since there was a lot of malic acid, the malos were long and slow. I don't know about elsewhere but here at the domaine 2010 is a really beautiful vintage. There is tension and verve to the wines and they make me think of the 2008s but with better density and riper tannins. And unlike the 2008s, I don't think that the 2010s will close up once they're in bottle." As to the now in-bottle '09s, they confirmed the seriously impressive quality that they displayed at this time last year. But as good as they are, and they are sensational, the Rousseau '10s are also amazing, in particular the Chambertin which is utterly brilliant. Rousseau noted that he used no new wood at all except for the Clos St. Jacques, Chambertin and Clos de Bèze. (Frederick Wildman, www.frederickwildman.com, NY, NY; Berry Brothers & Rudd, www.bbr.com, The Wine Society, www.thewinesociety.com, O.W. Loeb, www.owloeb.com, The Rare & Fine Wine Company Limited, www.therareandfinewinecompany.com, and Justerini & Brooks, www.justerinis.com, all UK).
Tasting note: This is also ultra-pure and densely fruited with notes of anise, mint, wet stone and a sauvage hint that introduces intensely earthy and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that are rich, powerful, serious and densely concentrated, all wrapped in a silky, palate staining, explosive and colossally persistent finish. This is actually relatively expressive and approachable for a young Cham yet the balance and harmony is present for this to age for decades. A brilliant effort and one of the best vintages ever for this justifiably revered wine.

  • Tasting note: Background notes of wood are discernible but stop short of being invasive as they still allow the restrained, cool and pure dark berry fruit and black cherry aromas to shine. Interestingly this is less overtly spicy as the Amoureuses at present though there is a genuinely gorgeous inner mouth perfume to the suave, round and polished middle weight plus flavors that possess plenty of underlying muscle and power on the hugely long, balanced and impressively complex finish. While clearly firmly structured, this is somewhat more forward and approachable than is typical for this wine.

Tasting note: Though this is by no means exuberant, it's clear that there is good ripeness to the spiced green tea, hoisin, soy, anise, sandalwood and rose petal aromas. The cool, pure and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors brim with both minerality and plenty of dry extract that buffers the extremely firm but not hard shaping tannins on the overtly austere if seriously persistent finish. This is perhaps best described as a block of stone at present and while the tannins are quite fine they are dense and coat the mouth. This is clearly going to need a lot of time and unlike several of the wines in the range, it's not likely to be a good candidate for early drinking. Despite the presence of plenty of volume and muscle, I would still describe 2012 as a vintage of finesse for this storied wine. In a word, brilliant.

  • Tasting note: A notably fresh nose features aromas of kirsch, spice, red currant and herbal tea that slide gracefully into intense, delineated and muscular medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality onto the mildly austere finale. I like the complexity and this is a wine that could probably be approached after 5 to 7 years of bottle age yet should be capable of rewarding 10 to 12.

"A highly spiced and exceptionally fresh, ripe and airy nose mixes a wide variety of mostly red berry fruit aromas though there are background notes of plum, cassis, lavender and oak. The broad-shouldered flavors possess a seductive texture thanks to the copious amounts of dry extract that push the very firm tannic spine to the background. I very much like the concentration here as well as the vibrancy and this is very, very dry in the best sense of the term, indeed it is presently almost crisp yet the very dense supporting tannins are clearly quite ripe. This should be a fantastic Bèze in time and eventually the 2012 could rank among the great vintages for this storied wine." Burghound

  • Tasting note: This relatively obscure 1er always displays an elegant and upper register nose dominated by cool red fruit aromas and obvious minerality that gives way to fresh and ultra pure middle weight flavors and a detailed, reserved and intense finish where the mineral character is almost pungent. • Tasting note: A pure, elegant and relatively high-toned red berry fruit nose reveals undertones of earth and even a hint of game that can also be found on the powerful, big, rich and robust flavors that possess real size and weight, especially in the context of the 2007 vintage that delivers more punch on the sappy and admirably long finish. This is an impressively-scaled effort that delivers outstanding length. In a word, terrific.

There is fine delineation and plenty of minerality on the utterly delicious middle weight flavors that are perhaps a bit less powerful than one might expect in the context of the vintage on the impeccably well-balanced and gorgeously long finish. This is a wonderfully harmonious effort that is very much still on the way up but among the 3 Rousseau "big boys", this is the closest one to being able to enjoy now. Tasting note: (harvested on September 25th). This most recent bottle was displaying quite a bit of brett and while it did not render the wine undrinkable, it wasn't what it should have been. I would note that the wine seemed to be completely ready. Not Rated.
From a note taken in November 2007: Here the nose has turned almost completely secondary and is actually, and unusually so for the vintage, a bit animale in character with ripe and spicy sous-bois notes that introduce very rich and concentrated flavors that are vibrant, punchy and detailed while exhibiting an attractive touch of minerality on the strikingly long finish. This is an impressively constituted '96 with solid phenolic maturity and the overall impression is a wine that is still relatively youthful. 92/2013+

Producer note: Jean-Marie Fourrier candidly explained that because there was so much rot in '00, he was obliged to treat his vines more than he prefers but that the green harvest helped not only eliminate excess crop but improved aeration as well, helping to keep the rot to manageable levels. Berry size was much bigger in '00 than in '99, and even after dropping a lot of crop, he didn't feel as though he had sufficient dry exact for the amount of juice and thus he did a saignée of between 5 to 8% for some wines. He also did more pigeage (punch downs) than normal; this is to say a whopping 4 times per day!
He also explained that the fermentations started almost immediately even though he had cooled the must to 12 degrees Centigrade. The malos were slow to begin as they didn't start until April and lasted as late as August. Since 97 he has tried not to rack his wines at all and these '00s had not been racked once, not even after the malos when the first racking typically occurs. He believes that extended aging on the lees produces more glycerol as well as keeps the wines very fresh.
Fourrier says that precision of fruit is what he was searching for with his 2000s as he is impressed with the vintage's purity. They will be bottled around April with no fining or filtration because he believes that almost every vintage needs an additional 6 to 8 months of élevage after the malos are finished. As an aside, Fourrier works as much as possible with CO2 and thus recommends decanting all of his wines before serving them; the rationale behind this is that he believes that the gas is a powerful preserver of wines and will keep them fresh longer while the tannic structure resolves itself.
The style of the Fourrier '00s is all about elegance and finesse. They are not particularly dense and certainly not over extracted or manipulated and few producers achieve this level of elegance, purity of fruit and impeccable balance.
Tasting note: Strikingly elegant nose of earth, pure pinot fruit and touch of game followed by sappy, gorgeously intense, mouth coating flavors of outstanding precision with a strong, persistent finish. The detail this delivers is really impressive and this will challenge the Rousseau as to which Clos St. Jacques is the best in '00.

    Don't miss!
Producer note: François Faiveley directs this 120 ha Domaine and compares the 2001 vintage to 1991, believing that the quality of the tannins is similar as is the early backward, slightly austere quality of the fruit. The present plan is to bottle in March and at the time of my late November tasting, none of the wines had been racked since the prior March, though few showed much reduction. (Wilson-Daniels, St. Helena, California)
Tasting note: Astonishing aromatic complexity with layers and layers of spice, dried rose petals and rich soil aromas followed by grandly scaled flavors that display superb extract and almost painful intensity plus staggering length. This is nothing short of phenomenal in its ability to harness the raw power and richness of the flavors without heaviness or clumsiness. This is a real stunner of a Clos de Bèze.

Note: from a .44 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines situated directly across from Chambertin
Producer note: In Denis Bachelet's view, 2005 is a "grand millésime. It's at least as good as 1999 and 2002 and perhaps better. We had a perfect growing season with a consistency and cleanliness of fruit that was even better than both of those two prior vintages. It was quite dry and thus we had very good but not excessive sugars, coming in between 12.5 and 13% with normal yields. I did a cool maceration of between 5 to 8 days depending on the wine and then didn't push the extraction as the skins were thick and gave up their colors and dry extract without much coaxing. The malos were extended, which I believe had as much to do with the cool 2006 growing season as with the amount of malic acid the 2005's possessed to begin with. In fact, between the extra concentration the wines are carrying and the late malos, I may very well delay the mise for another month or two to compensate as the wines seem to be improving month by month in barrel. Overall, I am extremely happy with my '05s and I am convinced that I have never made a better Charmes though obviously time will be the final judge of that." I would agree with Bachelet, not only on his Charmes but in general that his '05s are indeed spectacular. Moreover, the Côte de Nuits-Villages is among the very best of the entire vintage for its class. (A Becky Wasserman/Le Serbet Selection - sbw@leserbet.fr; Berry Bros., Howard Ripley and The Wine Society, UK).
Tasting note: The recent bottling has caused the nose to become relatively reticent compared to the prior wines though glimpses of the beautifully complex, elegant, refined and pure red pinot and black cherry fruit aromas are visible. The sweet, supple and forward flavors possess notably good length and near perfect balance and the underlying structure on the linear and impressively well delineated finish suggests that this will improve for up to a decade, perhaps slightly longer.

There is fine intensity to the sweet and unusually precise flavors that are the epitome of a high class Volnay. In particular, the finishing minerality contributes to the overall impression of elegance and precision, two characteristics that are relatively rare in this hot and generous vintage. This offers excellent cellar potential and at this early stage the wood, which is normally fairly prominent, is already well integrated but note that this will need every bit of 15 years, perhaps even slightly longer, to arrive at its prime as it's very structured. Producer note: Jacques Seysses described the 2007 vintage as having a "very early flowering with good early season weather that was unfortunately largely undone by a poor and wet summer. The second half of August however was very fine and we began picking on September 1st. It was necessary to do a severe sorting and as a result, we had a very small harvest. Sugars ranged from 12 to 13% but we had reasonably good phenolic ripeness thanks mainly to all of the old vines that we now have. In fact, I would go so far as to say that old vines were probably the most important qualitative determinant outside of the basic requirements of doing good vineyard work, proper sorting, etc. Destemming ranged from 0 to 30% so all the wines have a good percentage of stems in them. In terms of vinification, we did out best to preserve the natural elegance and finesse of the vintage. Overall, the vintage reminds me of 2000, which gave generous, ripe and round wines meant for early to mid-term drinking." I think consumers will like them very much, just as consumers have praised the 2000s." The Dujac 2007s are very much representative of the vintage as a whole, which is to say that it strongly favored old vines and the best expositions and while it's true that the grands crus virtually always produce the best wines, it is especially true in 2007. As to the Dujac 2006s, they have turned out to be lovely wines that are a bit riper if not quite as elegant as their 2007 counterparts. (Wilson-Daniels Ltd., St. Helena, CA and Chambers & Chambers, San Francisco, CA for southern California; Morris & Verdin, O.W. Loeb, Howard Ripley, Uncorked Ltd, Flint Wines and Lay & Wheeler, UK).
Tasting note: An overtly spiced nose adds nuance to the red berry fruit aromas laced with earth notes that merge into moderately-scaled and intense flavors that possess good volume and concentration as well as impressive persistence. The inherent breed of the appellation is quite evident.

Producer note: Frédéric Mugnier concisely described 2017 as one that "had a relatively easy growing season though anything would have seemed easy after 2016. We picked from the 5th of September, which was exactly 100 days after the mid-point of the flowering for our vines. We brought in yields that were between 35 to 40 hl/ha depending on the wines in question. That's a bit higher than what I aim for at 35 hl/ha but we rarely hit that for one reason or another. The 2017s are elegant and classically styled wines that should drink well young but because they're so well-balanced, there's no reason that they shouldn't age well too." As I was last year, I remain very enthusiastic about the quality of the Mugnier 2016s, revisited below, as they are excellent; they were bottled in June 2018. Tasting note: Like the Fuées, this is quite firmly reduced and will definitely benefit from a thorough aeration. The dense and sappy big-bodied flavors possess a relatively polished mouthfeel despite the presence of obvious muscle on the powerful, serious and youthfully austere finish. Extended patience will be required.

  • Tasting note: A potently expressive nose blends both wood and natural spice together with distinctly cool, pure and ripe wild red berries, earth and underbrush. The palate impression is a gorgeous combination of power and refinement along with flat out superb complexity on the explosively long, focused and beautifully well-balanced finish. The supporting structure is dense but fine and this should prove to be a moderately long-lived example.

  • Tasting note: A spicy and notably floral nose of attractively layered aromas features notes of cassis, black cherry and plum aromas. There is a lovely mineral streak that runs the length of the refined medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent complexity, all wrapped in a balanced, lingering and lilting finish. I very much like the finesse and brilliant mouth feel as it's pure silk.

  • Tasting note: Here the broad ranging nose is actually similar to that of the Amoureuses but it's both cooler and even more restrained. The penetratingly mineral-driven large-scaled flavors are an exercise in refinement with tremendous depth of material that pushes the very firm tannic spine to the background on the palate staining, linear and stunning intense finish. This magnificent effort is regal and aloof at this point and is conceding little in terms of accessibility yet it's irreproachably well-balanced which should permit this magnificent effort to develop slowly but surely over the next 15 plus years. The 2010 Musigny is yet another in a long line of great vintages of this wine from Mugnier.

  • "This is still exceptionally youthful with wonderfully spicy and highly complex red pinot fruit aromas that are enhanced by subtle nuances of floral notes, damp earth, underbrush and even a hint of game. The big, muscular but utterly refined full-bodied flavors are superbly intense, reserved and backward yet not hard as there is plenty of sap that buffers the firm but remarkably sophisticated tannins on the stunningly lengthy finish. This is a very concentrated wine of real breed and impeccable balance that should age for at least 3 decades and perhaps longer. A most impressive Grands Ech that is very much still on the way up. Consistent notes." Burghound

    La Romanée
    Grand Cru Red 750 ml
    Score: 97
    Tasted: Jan 10, 2012
    Drink: 2029+
    Issue: 45
Producer note: Louis-Michel Liger-Belair told me that 2010 fashioned "superbly elegant and exceptionally fresh wines but unfortunately there isn't a lot of them. We lost some yield due to the frost but it was mostly limited to the vines at the bottom of La Colombière. The poor flowering though contributed the most to the loss of yield and all told we were down about 30% relative to what we obtained in 2009. I elected to begin picking on the 26th of September and while the fruit was really quite clean, it still required some sorting though no more or no less than usual. I strongly believe in thoroughly sorting everything no matter the vintage as it's the little details that can make a big difference. Potential alcohols were very good if not high and ranged between 12 and 13%. As to the wines, I very much like them as they reflect their individual terroirs clearly. If I had to try to describe 2010 in terms of vintage comparisons, I would say that it is a blend of the styles of 2001 and 2008." As the scores and comments suggest, the now in-bottle '09s have also turned out extremely well and a number of them are really quite stunning. (A Becky Wasserman Selection/Le Serbet, www.leserbet.com, Beaune, France; additional distributors include Veritas Imports, www.veritaswine.com, CA/NV/AZ/NM and USA Wine Imports, www.usawineimports.com, NY, NY for "Selection Pas Mal", New York, NY; Justerini & Brooks, www.justerinis.com, UK and Richards Walford & Co., Ltd., www.r-w.co.uk, UK).
Tasting note: Initially a mild touch of reduction mutes the nose but some aggressive swirling quickly releases a kaleidoscopically broad range of spice nuances that add real breadth to the ultra-elegant, ripe and quite pure aromas of red pinot, plum and cassis that precede the rich, full and silky medium-bodied flavors that are discreet yet powerful and superbly persistent. This is an exceptionally stylish and classy wine that is supported by ultra-fine tannins and the hallmark finishing austerity. While the '09 La Romanée is essentially a wine of finesse it doesn't mean that it isn't built to age because it more assuredly is, indeed it will require at least 20 years to arrive at its peak.

  • Tasting note: Compared to the expressiveness of many of the prior wines, this is really quite reserved with pure, refined and naturally spicy red and dark berry pinot fruit that dissolves into round, generous and sweet flavors that, at least presently, lack the same depth as the best here and the finish doesn't have the focus that it usually does either. Perhaps I caught this at an awkward moment but the underlying material simply isn't what I'm used to seeing relative to the exceptionally high quality this wine typically delivers.

  • Tasting note: A notably ripe red and blue berry fruit nose is nuanced by chalk, minerals and abundant spice notes that continue onto the toasty, rich, full and massively powerful flavors that are suave and superbly concentrated, all wrapped in a very Bonnes Mares style finish as this is chewy but not rustic. An impressive wine where the finish doesn't seem to ever end.
