    Producer note: Louis-Michel Liger-Belair told me that 2011 was an "exceptionally precocious vintage that not only started early but ended early. I chose to begin picking on the 3rd of September and brought in super clean fruit though there was some sorting work required for under ripe berries, which cost us around 5%. Quantities were down again and I would estimate that they were off between 15 and 20% relative to a normal vintage. One of the really impressive aspects of this vintage is just how ripe the underlying phenolics are even though the potential alcohols were only slightly above average at between 12 and 13%. It was warm during the harvest and the fruit was obviously warm as well when it arrived at the cuverie. As such the fermentations started relatively rapidly. I elected to push the length of the cuvaisons significantly, which is to say that they normally last about 20 days but in 2011 the average was 25. The malos were varied with some finishing early and some late but the post-malo pHs were pretty much textbook at between 3.5 and 3.6. Overall, 2011 is not a great vintage but I like the wines a lot as they have good aging potential plus they will offer a lot of pleasure young." In other news Liger-Belair told me that he acquired the Nuits 1er monopole of La Grande Vigne (it's actually in Prémeaux) which measures 2.21 ha. He will also have some white next year as a .5 ha portion of La Grande Vigne is planted to chardonnay. As the scores and comments suggest, the now in-bottle '10s have also turned out extremely well and a number of them are really quite stunning, in particular the Reignots.     Tasting note: This is discreet and reserved with a gorgeously complex nose that offers up notes of violets, cassis, black berry, clove, sandalwood and anise hints. There is a palpable sense of energy to the brilliantly well-delineated, cool and restrained flavors that possess outstanding mid-palate concentration with focused power and a strong mineral component that culminate in a driving and explosive finish. What is interesting here though is that the power is delivered with no apparent weight and the supporting tannins are wonderfully sophisticated. While there is some of the trademark youthful austerity it seems less pronounced in 2010 than in some other recent vintages. A magnificent and perfectly balanced effort of pure silk that should age accordingly and this is undoubtedly one of the best wines in a great vintage.

  • (the estate's vines in the lieu-dit Les Champs Traversins lost about 35% of their fruit to the frost): Healthy medium-deep red. Darker on the nose than usual for the Dujac Echézeaux, offering musky scents of black raspberry and licorice. Rich, thick, seamless wine with lovely sweetness and a savory complexity; strong in extract but not particularly clenched in the early going. Finishes with ripe, dusty, chocolatey tannins, a slightly roasted fruit element and excellent length. This will need time in bottle to harmonize.

  • Tasting note: Here there is a completely different expression as the earth, leather and iron quality plus floral notes dominate the expressive red fruit nose and rich, superbly intense flavors that both coat and stain the palate with buckets of sappy extract. To be sure, this is no model of finesse though it is by no means rustic either but the complexity, quality of material and harmony combine to create a wine of lovely potential.

    Tasting note: A ripe and highly complex nose redolent of a mix of both primary and secondary black and blue fruit aromas nuanced by obvious spice and earth notes that are also reflected by the maturing yet still noticeably tannic medium full-bodied flavors that culminate in dusty, linear and focused finish that displays just a touch of backend dryness that will probably always be present. I recommend drinking this with the appropriate food.

    Tasting note: This has always been an elegant wine and it remains one with its gorgeously perfumed and beautifully layered aromas of spicy secondary fruit, earth and a hint of sandalwood. There is an equally lovely inner mouth perfume to the chiseled, intense and stony lighter weight flavors that possess a silky texture that is not confirmed by the finish as the latter is somewhat drying and puckery. As the description suggests, this has obvious attributes but unfortunately the dryness is only likely to become more pronounced and thus I would advise drinking up.

  • Tasting note: A remarkably fresh and expressive nose displays high-toned red berry fruit, earth and mineral aromas that give way to firm, serious and equally mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that offer excellent verve on the well-muscled and especially structured finish that seems to go on without end. This positively dazzling effort is not quite old school in basic character though it knocks on the door of it and like several of these grands crus, will need 15 to 20+ years to reach its full prime. A 'wow' and potentially one of the greatest vintages ever for the Dujac Bonnes Mares, which is saying something given this wine's superb track record.

  • Tasting note: A markedly floral nose exhibits plenty of spice and earth elements that add breadth to the purple fruit-infused nose. There is excellent size, weight and power to the big-bodied, intense and concentrated flavors that possess copious amounts of dry extract that imparts a seductive texture and buffers the very firm tannic spine on the hugely long finish. This too is an overtly robust yet impeccably well-balanced wine that should also age for years; indeed it will absolutely require it.

  • Tasting note: This is aromatically similar to the straight Gevrey villages cuvée though with much better complexity. There is also more size, weight and intensity to the stony and muscular medium weight flavors that possess a sleek mouthfeel, all wrapped in a precise, lingering and youthfully austere finale. This will also definitely need at least some time in bottle before it will be approachable.

  • Tasting note: A markedly sauvage-inflected nose combines ultra-fresh and cool aromas of plum, violet, dark currant and plenty of earth. There is similar size, weight and muscle to the equally stony middle weight flavors that possess a chiseled, youthfully austere and beautifully persistent finish. This is even firmer though the supporting tannins are clearly ripe. Patience advised.

Red Burgundy Bachelet, Denis 2003 Charmes Chambertin Vielles Vignes 3 Bottle 75cl £325
  • Deep ruby-red. Expressive aromas of blackberry liqueur, bitter chocolate and coffee; more open than the Corbeaux today. Then superripe in the mouth but a bit less forthcoming, with explosive, surprisingly primary flavors of blackberry and dark chocolate. Boasts a huge middle, especially for a Bachelet wine, but also more finesse than the Corbeaux. This reminded me a bit of a top pinot from the Sonoma Coast. Spreads out to coat the entire palate and mounts slowly and inexorably on the back. A very deep, black fruit-dominated Charmes that's quite fresh for the year. Lay this down for a few years or give it time in a decanter.

    Note: from a .44 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines situated directly across from Chambertin
    Producer note: In Denis Bachelet's view, 2005 is a "grand millésime. It's at least as good as 1999 and 2002 and perhaps better. We had a perfect growing season with a consistency and cleanliness of fruit that was even better than both of those two prior vintages. It was quite dry and thus we had very good but not excessive sugars, coming in between 12.5 and 13% with normal yields. I did a cool maceration of between 5 to 8 days depending on the wine and then didn't push the extraction as the skins were thick and gave up their colors and dry extract without much coaxing. The malos were extended, which I believe had as much to do with the cool 2006 growing season as with the amount of malic acid the 2005's possessed to begin with. In fact, between the extra concentration the wines are carrying and the late malos, I may very well delay the mise for another month or two to compensate as the wines seem to be improving month by month in barrel. Overall, I am extremely happy with my '05s and I am convinced that I have never made a better Charmes though obviously time will be the final judge of that." I would agree with Bachelet, not only on his Charmes but in general that his '05s are indeed spectacular. Moreover, the Côte de Nuits-Villages is among the very best of the entire vintage for its class.     Tasting note: The recent bottling has caused the nose to become relatively reticent compared to the prior wines though glimpses of the beautifully complex, elegant, refined and pure red pinot and black cherry fruit aromas are visible. The sweet, supple and forward flavors possess notably good length and near perfect balance and the underlying structure on the linear and impressively well delineated finish suggests that this will improve for up to a decade, perhaps slightly longer.

    Tasting note: A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice, menthol and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet. As one would reasonably expect this is quite firm; indeed it's borderline rustic.

  • Tasting note: Very generous wood stops just short of being dominant on the red pinot fruit, mocha, forest floor and newly turned earth. There is outstanding concentration to the big-bodied and overtly powerful flavors that brim with dry extract that serves to buffer the very firm but not really robust or especially austere finale. This is certainly a big wine but I don't find the separation that I normally find between this and the old vines cuvée though it may separate more clearly in time.

  • Score: 97 Deep ruby color. A kaleidoscopically spicy and broad-ranging nose grudgingly reveals notes of red cherry, cassis, plum, violet, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and hoisin. The velvety and mouth coating imposingly-scaled and intense mineral-driven flavors are blessed with seemingly endless reserves of dry extract that coat the palate on the highly seductive finish that delivers fantastically good length on the youthfully austere, backward and immaculately well-balanced finale. This opulent yet very serious effort is also going to require a very long snooze in a very cool cellar but it should be a remarkable Musigny when it finally emerges. I would add that I don't know if this will be potentially one of the all-time great vintages for the de Vogüé Musigny but my guess is that it will at least be in the conversation, which given the historical track record of this wine, is no small compliment.

  • The 2009 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts graces the palate with finesse and nuance to spare. Hints of graphite, spices and crushed rocks add complexity to the fruit, but this is ultimately a wine of texture above all else. Silky tannins frame the highly expressive finesse. The 2009 Malconsorts has really come together over the last six months. It is more immediate than the 2010 tasted alongside it, but in a perfect world a well-stocked cellar would have both vintages. This is a flat-out great Malconsorts from Etienne de Montille.

  • An openly spicy and floral nose is more deeply pitched with its combination of black cherry, dark currant and sandalwood wisps. There is excellent power and punch to the middle weight plus flavors that retain a really lovely sense of detail while exhibiting excellent depth and length on the austere, serious and built-to-age finale. Note that this is going to need time before it realizes its full and considerable potential.

    The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a clean, precise bouquet, quite broody and introspective, a subtle marine influence infusing the black and red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, chalky tannin, tightly wound with a strict, saline finish that leaves the mouth tingling long after it has departed. This is a classy, quite sophisticated Echézeaux in the making, one that should be at the upper end of my banded score with requisite bottle age.

    (the Dujac holding is in the lieu-dit Les Champs Traversins): Bright, dark red. Expressive, highly perfumed aromas of black cherry, red licorice, rose petal, lavender and wild herbs. Tightly wound and energetic, showing terrific lift and an almost weightless impression to the flavors of red berries, spices and flowers. Has the fruit intensity to support its firm, dusty tannins. Quite unevolved today, but this wine only finished its malolactic fermentation in August.

  • (the estate made a full crop of 40 hectoliters per hectare, as there was no frost here): Full, dark red. Captivating aromas of raspberry, strawberry, spices, flowers and sweet new oak. Juicy, intense and aromatic on the palate--youthfully imploded in a positive way. Projects compelling energy and subtle sweetness to its red berry and spice flavors. Finishes very long and tight, with an exhilarating wild berry element. A knockout sharply delineated Clos de la Roche that offers terrific intensity without any sense of weight.

    Producer note: Jean-Marie Fourrier candidly explained that because there was so much rot in '00, he was obliged to treat his vines more than he prefers but that the green harvest helped not only eliminate excess crop but improved aeration as well, helping to keep the rot to manageable levels. Berry size was much bigger in '00 than in '99, and even after dropping a lot of crop, he didn't feel as though he had sufficient dry exact for the amount of juice and thus he did a saignée of between 5 to 8% for some wines. He also did more pigeage (punch downs) than normal; this is to say a whopping 4 times per day!
    He also explained that the fermentations started almost immediately even though he had cooled the must to 12 degrees Centigrade. The malos were slow to begin as they didn't start until April and lasted as late as August. Since 97 he has tried not to rack his wines at all and these '00s had not been racked once, not even after the malos when the first racking typically occurs. He believes that extended aging on the lees produces more glycerol as well as keeps the wines very fresh.
    Fourrier says that precision of fruit is what he was searching for with his 2000s as he is impressed with the vintage's purity. They will be bottled around April with no fining or filtration because he believes that almost every vintage needs an additional 6 to 8 months of élevage after the malos are finished. As an aside, Fourrier works as much as possible with CO2 and thus recommends decanting all of his wines before serving them; the rationale behind this is that he believes that the gas is a powerful preserver of wines and will keep them fresh longer while the tannic structure resolves itself.
    The style of the Fourrier '00s is all about elegance and finesse. They are not particularly dense and certainly not over extracted or manipulated and few producers achieve this level of elegance, purity of fruit and impeccable balance.
    Tasting note: Strikingly elegant nose of earth, pure pinot fruit and touch of game followed by sappy, gorgeously intense, mouth coating flavors of outstanding precision with a strong, persistent finish. The detail this delivers is really impressive and this will challenge the Rousseau as to which Clos St. Jacques is the best in '00.

  • Tasting note: (harvested on September 25th). This most recent bottle was displaying quite a bit of brett and while it did not render the wine undrinkable, it wasn't what it should have been. I would note that the wine seemed to be completely ready. Not Rated.
    From a note taken in November 2007: Here the nose has turned almost completely secondary and is actually, and unusually so for the vintage, a bit animale in character with ripe and spicy sous-bois notes that introduce very rich and concentrated flavors that are vibrant, punchy and detailed while exhibiting an attractive touch of minerality on the strikingly long finish. This is an impressively constituted '96 with solid phenolic maturity and the overall impression is a wine that is still relatively youthful. 92/2013+

  • The 2016 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru was picked on September 25 at 24hL/ha. As usual, I allowed it five or six minutes to open in the glass. It is a very subtle Romanée-Conti, more discreet than the 2016 La Tâche, but then you become entranced by its spellbinding purity and grace. It gradually builds aromatically, augmenting the black fruit with red, and developing scents of wild hedgerow and freshly tilled soil - almost a pastoral element. The palate is medium-bodied with extremely precise and fine tannin and notes of wild strawberry, cranberry and crushed limestone. This feels very harmonious, the texture silkier than the La Tâche, displaying just a touch of bay leaf and black pepper toward the sustained finish, which gains depth and grip with aeration. Exquisite, though I suspect the La Tâche will challenge it for supremacy. 440 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in-bottle tasting in London.
