Tasting note: A fully mature but not post-mature nose that is clearly very ripe offers up aromas warm earth, sous-bois, very subtle spice hints and an interesting sauvage note that also infuses the rich, full, delicious and relatively powerful broad-shouldered flavors that possess good mid-palate density and natural sweetness yet finish with outstanding intensity and just a bit of the classic austerity of a typical Clos de Vougeot. Note that because the reviews of this wine from 750 ml format (see herein) were recently released by Remoissenet, they actually drank as well as the same wine from magnum that had not been as pristinely stored.

  • Maison Leroy release: Bricked completely through to the center. Despite the total bricking, there is still a sense of freshness to the wonderfully spicy and expressive nose that is now largely dominated by sous bois-infused aromas and this sense of vibrancy continues onto the minerally and beautifully detailed flavors that finish with first rate complexity and excellent length. If there is a nit, it's that the is a very subtle touch of dryness that does not pose a problem over the next few years but probably will in time. This is a really impressive effort that is very Vosne in character. Tasted three times with consistent results.

Tasting note: (opened from personal storage and also thanks to Jeremy Ringle). An attractively complex nose is composed of marked secondary aromas as well as hints of sous-bois, earth and a touch of Vosne spice. There is fine weight and vibrancy to the medium weight and moderately rich flavors that delivers very good if not outstanding length. While this was an exceptionally good '92 in its youth, the finish is beginning to thin out slightly and this is clearly not what it was, in particular because there is a slight soupiness to the backend and it's losing its focus. It's time to drink up though I should point out that this is still in remarkably good shape when considered within the context of the vintage, in fact I would go so far as to describe this as an excellent '92. Multiple and consistent notes.

Tasting note: (opened from personal storage). This is surprisingly forward for the vintage with a gorgeously elegant and fully mature nose that features plenty of Gevrey earth, truffle and a certain animale character. The light to barely medium weight flavors display fine complexity and lovely intensity on the mineral-driven and delicious finish where a touch of dryness surfaces that isn't enough to really impart a sense of imbalance. This is drinking perfectly now and there is little if any benefit to holding it further as it will probably eventually begin to dry out though that shouldn't happen for at least a decade. Consistent notes.

Tasting note: As good as the Roumier '96s are, his '95s are even better and they are among the very best wines of the vintage. This wine has finally arrived at a point where it's no longer infanticide as the ripe and very densely fruited dark berry fruit nose and robust, powerful, muscled and concentrated flavors are beginning to open and the signs of what is to come are now in evidence. There is massive density and incredible sap and while there are prominent tannins, they are ripe and perfectly integrated for what is still a moderately young Bonnes Mares. The fabulous potential this displayed from cask is now almost realized and while it will need another five years to really be at its best, it should last for two to three decades after that. In short, this is a truly great Bonnes Mares. Tasted many times with mostly consistent notes though this most recent bottle was so good that I have upgraded my score slightly; that said I had another recent bottle that displayed quite a bit of volatile acidity and clearly was not a good example.

From a note taken in November 2007: Here the nose has turned almost completely secondary and is actually, and unusually so for the vintage, a bit animale in character with ripe and spicy sous-bois notes that introduce very rich and concentrated flavors that are vibrant, punchy and detailed while exhibiting an attractive touch of minerality on the strikingly long finish. This is an impressively constituted '96 with solid phenolic maturity and the overall impression is a wine that is still relatively youthful. 92/2013+

Tasting note: (from 45+ year old vines). Always one of the most consistent performers in the Faiveley portfolio, the '99 Mazis is nothing short of superb with its beautifully dark ruby color and deep, brooding aromas of earth, iron, traces of leather and dried herbs followed by intense, penetrating, full-bodied, rich, slightly wild, gamey flavors all perfectly framed by outstanding fruit/acid balance. Though not quite as detailed and mineral-laden as the equally impressive '99 Latricières, this too is very long with terrific persistence and simply oozes the unmistakable class and power of a Gevrey grand cru. There is so much pinot baby fat that this is deceptively approachable now but it will age and improve for at least a decade and drink well for another. A very impressive effort.

The 1999 Romanee-St-Vivant initially has its nose put out of joint by the precocious 1999 Echezeaux, but allowing the wine to unfold over 30 to 40 minutes, it shows its true breeding. Returning after ten minutes, the nose positively explodes from the glass with a sorbet-like purity – hints of wild strawberry, cassis and a little blueberry – a piercing intensity that is wondrous to behold. The palate is medium-bodied and does not have the volume of the 1999 Echezeaux, but there is superior clarity and focus, the tannins clearly fine and the finish shimmering with tension and femininity. This is just a beautiful wine that will only get better. Drink 2016-2030.

    Outstanding
Producer note: Jean-Marie Fourrier candidly explained that because there was so much rot in '00, he was obliged to treat his vines more than he prefers but that the green harvest helped not only eliminate excess crop but improved aeration as well, helping to keep the rot to manageable levels. Berry size was much bigger in '00 than in '99, and even after dropping a lot of crop, he didn't feel as though he had sufficient dry exact for the amount of juice and thus he did a saignée of between 5 to 8% for some wines. He also did more pigeage (punch downs) than normal; this is to say a whopping 4 times per day!
He also explained that the fermentations started almost immediately even though he had cooled the must to 12 degrees Centigrade. The malos were slow to begin as they didn't start until April and lasted as late as August. Since 97 he has tried not to rack his wines at all and these '00s had not been racked once, not even after the malos when the first racking typically occurs. He believes that extended aging on the lees produces more glycerol as well as keeps the wines very fresh.
Fourrier says that precision of fruit is what he was searching for with his 2000s as he is impressed with the vintage's purity. They will be bottled around April with no fining or filtration because he believes that almost every vintage needs an additional 6 to 8 months of élevage after the malos are finished. As an aside, Fourrier works as much as possible with CO2 and thus recommends decanting all of his wines before serving them; the rationale behind this is that he believes that the gas is a powerful preserver of wines and will keep them fresh longer while the tannic structure resolves itself.
The style of the Fourrier '00s is all about elegance and finesse. They are not particularly dense and certainly not over extracted or manipulated and few producers achieve this level of elegance, purity of fruit and impeccable balance.
Tasting note: Strikingly elegant nose of earth, pure pinot fruit and touch of game followed by sappy, gorgeously intense, mouth coating flavors of outstanding precision with a strong, persistent finish. The detail this delivers is really impressive and this will challenge the Rousseau as to which Clos St. Jacques is the best in '00.

Acids were "correct" and they were placed in new oak that averaged what it usually does, which is to say 25% for the 1ers and 50% for the grands crus. He plans on bottling in December and January with no fining or filtration.

    Don't miss!
Producer note: François Faiveley directs this 120 ha Domaine and compares the 2001 vintage to 1991, believing that the quality of the tannins is similar as is the early backward, slightly austere quality of the fruit. The present plan is to bottle in March and at the time of my late November tasting, none of the wines had been racked since the prior March, though few showed much reduction. (Wilson-Daniels, St. Helena, California)
Tasting note: Astonishing aromatic complexity with layers and layers of spice, dried rose petals and rich soil aromas followed by grandly scaled flavors that display superb extract and almost painful intensity plus staggering length. This is nothing short of phenomenal in its ability to harness the raw power and richness of the flavors without heaviness or clumsiness. This is a real stunner of a Clos de Bèze.

This has continued its upward development while still maintaining its superb aromatic density with still relatively primary aromas of blueberries, earth and animale notes. There is good power and concentation to the intense yet refined flavors that are underpinned by a firm but ripe tannic spine on the wonderfully long finish. This is developing beautifully and while there are still a few more years of unrealized upside potential in store, this is not so far away that it would be a vinous crime to open a bottle now. This is very sappy and completely coats and stains the palate with dusty tannins and a finish that lasts and lasts. Tasting note: (opened from personal storage). Somewhat curiously given the natural coolness of Chambertin, this seems noticeably riper than the '03 Clos de Bèze (see herein) with notes of mocha, spice, earth and markedly ripe black currant aromas. There is excellent size, weight, concentration and power to the big-bodied and extract-rich flavors that coat the mouth before culminating in a lightly mineral-inflected, velvety and as the nose suggests, mocha-tinged finish. This is more 2003 in basic character than the Bèze though as is usually the case, it's more structured as well though with 45 minutes in a decanter, this too could be drunk now with pleasure. That said, I would be inclined to give this at least 6 to 10 more years first though please be aware that this will be capable of holding for decades. Multiple, and consistent, notes save for the fact that some examples seem to display more prominent wood than others.

There is fine intensity to the sweet and unusually precise flavors that are the epitome of a high class Volnay. In particular, the finishing minerality contributes to the overall impression of elegance and precision, two characteristics that are relatively rare in this hot and generous vintage. In short, this is a really beautiful effort that should continue to cellar well for years to come. Note: from a .44 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines situated directly across from Chambertin
Producer note: In Denis Bachelet's view, 2005 is a "grand millésime. It's at least as good as 1999 and 2002 and perhaps better. We had a perfect growing season with a consistency and cleanliness of fruit that was even better than both of those two prior vintages. It was quite dry and thus we had very good but not excessive sugars, coming in between 12.5 and 13% with normal yields. I did a cool maceration of between 5 to 8 days depending on the wine and then didn't push the extraction as the skins were thick and gave up their colors and dry extract without much coaxing. The malos were extended, which I believe had as much to do with the cool 2006 growing season as with the amount of malic acid the 2005's possessed to begin with. In fact, between the extra concentration the wines are carrying and the late malos, I may very well delay the mise for another month or two to compensate as the wines seem to be improving month by month in barrel. Overall, I am extremely happy with my '05s and I am convinced that I have never made a better Charmes though obviously time will be the final judge of that." I would agree with Bachelet, not only on his Charmes but in general that his '05s are indeed spectacular. Moreover, the Côte de Nuits-Villages is among the very best of the entire vintage for its class. (A Becky Wasserman/Le Serbet Selection - sbw@leserbet.fr; Berry Bros., Howard Ripley and The Wine Society, UK).
Tasting note: The recent bottling has caused the nose to become relatively reticent compared to the prior wines though glimpses of the beautifully complex, elegant, refined and pure red pinot and black cherry fruit aromas are visible. The sweet, supple and forward flavors possess notably good length and near perfect balance and the underlying structure on the linear and impressively well delineated finish suggests that this will improve for up to a decade, perhaps slightly longer.

This is an extremely rich wine and because of the influence of the wood, the detail that will very likely come with time in bottle has not yet developed but this is so concentrated yet balanced that it's only a matter of time. This will live for ages and somewhat surprisingly, this is actually approachable now simply because it is so concentrated yet I suspect that when this finally shuts down, it will stay there for the better part of a decade. • Tasting note: A slightly less elegant but equally complex nose of almost exclusively red berry fruit aromas nuanced by touches of earth, underbrush and a subtle hint of game precede round, rich and generous flavors underpinned by suave tannins and a velvety and dusty finish. At present the tannins are on the chewy side and like the Latricières, this will require a certain amount of patience.

Tasting note: A ripe yet cool and wonderfully fresh nose is composed of mostly red berry fruit, discreet spice and earth, all of which is trimmed in an extremely subtle touch of oak. There is fine delineation and plenty of minerality on the utterly delicious middle weight flavors that are perhaps a bit less powerful than one might expect in the context of the vintage on the impeccably well-balanced and gorgeously long finish. This is a wonderfully harmonious effort that is very much still on the way up but among the 3 Rousseau "big boys", this is the closest one to being able to enjoy now. That said, another 5 to 8 years will certainly return benefits.

  • Tasting note: A hint of menthol adds nuance to the mostly highly-spiced red berry fruit nose that is quite reserved if beautifully complex while leading to sweet, delicious, generous and round medium full flavors that are classy and refined, all wrapped in a strikingly persistent and explosive finish. This offers excellent cellar potential and at this early stage the wood, which is normally fairly prominent, is already well integrated but note that this will need every bit of 15 years, perhaps even slightly longer, to arrive at its prime as it's very structured. A really beautiful LGR that showed even a bit better than it had only three weeks earlier as it was given the benefit of an hour's worth of air.
