  • Tasting note: A tight and while not completely closed, it would be fair to describe as the nose of subtly layered and spicy dark currant aromas as highly restrained. By contrast, there is fine vibrancy and freshness to the silky and focused middle weight flavors that are shaped by fine grained if distinctly firm tannins, all wrapped in a wonderfully intense, mouth coating, impressively persistent and austere finish. This may be a Clos St. Denis of finesse but it doesn't lack for power or seriousness.

  • Tasting note: There is a bit more wood on the fresh and open sauvage-infused nose of both red and dark currant, earth and game hints. There is excellent volume to the very smooth and polished mid-palate of the broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of dry extract before culminating in a mineral-inflected, powerful and long finish. This moderately firm effort is supported by tannins that are ripe if borderline rustic. A classic Mazis.

  • Tasting note: After a few years of bottle age this appears to be even better than I originally thought that it might be. There is a touch of wood framing ultra-fresh and ripe but brooding and deeply pitched nose of dried flowers, dark berry fruit, humus, earth and sauvage nuances. There is excellent punch and power to the minerally and beautifully focused middle weight flavors that are underpinned by phenolically mature structural elements before culminating in a dusty, firm and gorgeously persistent finish. This well-concentrated effort is developing slowly but most impressively though plenty of patience is yet required. In sum, this is a knock out!

  • Tasting note: A notably fresh nose features aromas of kirsch, spice, red currant and herbal tea that slide gracefully into intense, delineated and muscular medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality onto the mildly austere finale. I like the complexity and this is a wine that could probably be approached after 5 to 7 years of bottle age yet should be capable of rewarding 10 to 12.

  • The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles has quite a plush and outgoing bouquet with hints of licorice and damson developing in the glass—just a touch of headiness here. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black cherry and boysenberry jam notes, a little smudged on the finish where I would be seeking more tension. But I suspect this will improve once in bottle.

Tasting note: (opened from personal storage). This is surprisingly forward for the vintage with a gorgeously elegant and fully mature nose that features plenty of Gevrey earth, truffle and a certain animale character. The light to barely medium weight flavors display fine complexity and lovely intensity on the mineral-driven and delicious finish where a touch of dryness surfaces that isn't enough to really impart a sense of imbalance. This is drinking perfectly now and there is little if any benefit to holding it further as it will probably eventually begin to dry out though that shouldn't happen for at least a decade. Consistent notes.

  • Deep ruby. This is also quite floral yet the character of it is from whiter flowers than those of the Amoureuses. In addition there is good ripeness but also fine freshness to the plum, black cherry, cassis and blueberry aromas. The supple but tautly muscular medium weight plus flavors possess a suave mouth feel thanks to the abundant dry extract that both coats the palate and buffers the very firm tannic spine on the highly persistent finish. Patience will be required.

  • Tasting note: Here the wood is more moderate if by no means invisible as it sets off the overtly spicy and fresh nose that mixes both red and dark berry fruit aromas that display subtle menthol nuances. There is good punch to the supple and fleshy medium weight flavors that evidence plenty of minerality, all wrapped in a solidly persistent and well-layered finale. This should reward 10 to 12 years of cellar time.

  • Tasting note: More subtle though still prominent oak can be found on the much more reserved red currant and dark berry-suffused nose that displays an astonishing array of spice, exotic tea and soft earth aromas. There is better energy as well as more evident minerality on the sleek and sophisticated flavors that deliver superb length and depth on the balanced finale. This is a powerful but classy effort that, very much like the Le Corton, is going to need a long stay in a cool cellar to fully resolve the supporting structure.

  • Tasting note: More discreet wood more easily allows the overtly spicy aromas of poached plum, lavender and tea, The round yet reasonably well-detailed flavors possess a sophisticated mouth feel as well as fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, mineral-driven and very firm finish. Unlike the Grèves however, this excellent effort should be reasonably approachable after 5 to 7 years. Burghound

  • Tasting note: There is enough wood spice present to remark upon though not so much as to mask the pretty and airy combination of various red berry aromas that are sprinkled with earth and floral nuances. I like the refinement of the round, supple and attractively textured middle weight flavors that are shaped by firm but well-integrated tannins on the solidly persistent and well-balanced finale. • Tasting note: This is both more complex and more aromatically refined as well with a wonderfully layered nose of spiced plum, cassis and violets where additional nuance is added by notes of earth and leather. The attractively, even seductively textured medium weight flavors possess an abundance of dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the otherwise firm tannins and imparts a velvety texture to the dusty, long and serious finish. • Bright dark red. Darker on the nose than the preceding samples: black raspberry, black cherry, minerals and bitter chocolate. Very tight and in need of patience, offering a distinctly crunchy quality to the youthfully medicinal black cherry, licorice and mineral flavors. No easy sweetness here today. Shows more energy and cut than its 2014 sibling but this wine is also more backward and will need longer to fill out. A classic example of a cool terroir in a cool vintage. Vinous

  • Deep red with ruby highlights. Riper and blacker but a bit monolithic on the nose and palate. Black cherry and licorice scents lead to dark raspberry and crushed stone in the mouth. Not at all herbal but in a very cool style and tightly wound. This powerful, backward, youthfully uncompromising wine is hard to taste today owing to its firm tannic spine and strong medicinal reserve. Will it ultimately surpass the more sensual Grands-Echézeaux?

  • Good dark red. Cool, youthfully inexpressive nose dominated by black cherry and smoky minerality; the strictest of these 2014s today (Mallard described it as Cistercian). Densely packed and very rich but classically dry, with savory minerality currently holding the upper hand over the wine's fruit. This extremely backward wine is also showing its new oak element (85%) in the early going, with the firmly tannic finish displaying a note of caramel along with a strong impression of saline dry extract.

Tasting note: A toasty nose features notes of menthol, spiced tea, red currant and a hint of cherry liqueur. The velvety, rich and seductively textured medium weight flavors possess the usual muscularity of a fine Les Baudes, all wrapped in a robust and even more structured finale that is long, balanced and very serious. I would not advise buying this high-quality effort without the express intention to allow it at least 6 to 8 years first.

The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots is pointed on the nose, the fruit veering toward black rather than red in hue, with blackcurrant and wilted violet petals emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry: notes of black cherries, raspberry and soy that surface toward the composed and harmonious finish. Perhaps not a long-term Santenots like other 2012s that I have encountered, nevertheless this is a finely crafted wine destined to dish out pleasure.

The 2012 Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Proces has a wonderful, energetic yet sophisticated bouquet with vibrant red and black fruit married harmoniously with the oak. The palate is very smooth on the entry with supple, lithe tannins that caress the mouth. The acidity is well-judged with tart, dark cherry fruit interlaced with hints of soy, while the finish is focused and long. This Nuits Saint Georges has great potential.

The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from located on the Mazoyeres side toward Latricieres by the “Route de Grand Cru”. It has a rounded nose that envelops the senses: strawberry and mulberry at first, flint and smoke following after. The palate is very fine on the entry, exuding weightless intensity with immense precision. Apart from Denis Bachelet, this is probably one of the finest examples that I have encountered.

  • Tasting note: A pure, elegant and relatively high-toned red berry fruit nose reveals undertones of earth and even a hint of game that can also be found on the powerful, big, rich and robust flavors that possess real size and weight, especially in the context of the 2007 vintage that delivers more punch on the sappy and admirably long finish. This is an impressively-scaled effort that delivers outstanding length. In a word, terrific.

  • Tasting note: This relatively obscure 1er always displays an elegant and upper register nose dominated by cool red fruit aromas and obvious minerality that gives way to fresh and ultra pure middle weight flavors and a detailed, reserved and intense finish where the mineral character is almost pungent. This is a beautiful effort that defines finesse.

    Don't miss!
Producer note: I met on this visit with Erwan Faiveley's second in command Bernard Hervet as Faiveley is completing an MBA in New York. He described 2009 as a vintage that is "ripe and warm but without any heaviness. I could smell mocha in the fruit and this only happens in vintages where the seeds attain a high level of ripeness. We began picking the reds on the 7th of September and brought in impeccably clean fruit and quite a bit of it as yields were generous but it's important to note that they were not ridiculous. The amount of destemming varied considerably, indeed between 0% and 100%. We did a classic vinification of about three weeks and the colors came quickly. We used a bit less new wood and what we did use was with a very light toast. As to the wines, I would compare the 2009 vintage with 1959 or 1964, which is to say other very ripe vintages with large yields. In 2009, the classification hierarchy is well and truly in evidence as each level is clearly better than its precedent. There also isn't much difference in quality between the two Côtes, which is something that you can't always say. I have noticed though that 2009 really shines between Corton and Nuits St. Georges as the wines are finer than they typically are. Overall, the most important aspect of the vintage though is that it produced balanced wines and thus they are going to age much better than people presently give them credit for." (Wilson & Daniels, www.wilsondaniels.com, St. Helena, CA; there are many sources in the UK, among them John Armit Wines, www.armit.co.uk, UK, Berry Brothers & Rudd, www.bbr.com, UK, Howard Ripley, www.howardripley.com, UK, The Wine Society, www.thewinesociety.com, UK and Haynes, Hanson & Clark, www.hhandc.co.uk, UK). Note: all wines with the exception of the Bourgogne, the Blagny and the Santenots are from Domaine fruit.
Tasting note: Compelling aromas of extremely fresh and airy menthol-infused red berry fruit, soil and distinctly spiced tones plus an underlying hint of animale transfers over to the rich, full and serious broad-shouldered flavors brimming with dry extract and supported by impressively refined and ripe tannins that are almost completely buffered on the powerful and balanced finish by the buckets of mid-palate sap. Terrific.

  • Tasting note: A brooding but impressively complex nose features notes of red currant, plum, earth and plenty of that Corton sauvage character. The textured, intense and broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration with fully mature structural elements. There is ample buffering sap, which is important as one would reasonably expect, this is a big and sleekly muscled wine with an explosively long, linear and overtly austere finish. The potential here is mostly impressive though note that plenty of patience is requisite.

Medium red. Complex aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, leather, truffle and smoky earth. Rich, chewy and deep, with captivating sweetness to the red fruit and spice flavors. Finishes with a kick of acidity, a saline nuance and noteworthy rising length. With extended time in the recorked bottle, this Volnay gained markedly in dusty spice character.

  • Tasting note: This is really quite aromatically pretty with its fresh and cool aromas of red and black pinot fruit, earth, game and wet stone nuances. The sense of minerality continues onto the intense, delineated and energetic flavors that display noticeable wood toast on the lingering, dusty and mildly austere finish. This is firmly structured yet balanced and should reward longer-term cellaring if desired as this could be approached young too.

Tasting note: As good as the Roumier '96s are, his '95s are even better and they are among the very best wines of the vintage. This wine has finally arrived at a point where it's no longer infanticide as the ripe and very densely fruited dark berry fruit nose and robust, powerful, muscled and concentrated flavors are beginning to open and the signs of what is to come are now in evidence. There is massive density and incredible sap and while there are prominent tannins, they are ripe and perfectly integrated for what is still a moderately young Bonnes Mares. The fabulous potential this displayed from cask is now almost realized and while it will need another five years to really be at its best, it should last for two to three decades after that. In short, this is a truly great Bonnes Mares. Tasted many times with mostly consistent notes though this most recent bottle was so good that I have upgraded my score slightly; that said I had another recent bottle that displayed quite a bit of volatile acidity and clearly was not a good example.
