Note: from vines that were planted in 1910
Producer note: François Labet told me that 2012 was a "challenging vintage in the Côte de Nuits for a wide variety of reasons up until the 10th of August, but it was even more challenging in the Côte de Beaune. Once we arrived at the 10th of August though it was generally remarkable how quickly the vines recovered and got the fruit ripening process back on track. Before that though the flowering was quite troubled and resulted in a lot of shatter and shot berries. While there was some disease pressure, most notably from mildew, we were able to limit the damage by treating when and how it was necessary. We began picking on the 23rd of September and brought in very clean and phenolically mature fruit and I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality as I never expected it to be as good as it was. As to the wines, they are rich, powerful and very generous yet well-balanced wines that will have that rare ability to give pleasure young but because of the concentration, age for years too. I think that they will surprise a lot of people by how well they age." It seems that Labet rarely misses anymore and 2012 is no exception. The 2011s, revisited below, were bottled in July 2013. Tasting note: Deep ruby. An intensely floral nose is composed of cool but ripe red pinot, dark currant and plenty of pungent earth scents. There is more size, weight, power and concentration to the imposingly constructed flavors that are both supported and shaped by the tightly wound and extremely firm tannins, all wrapped in a mouth coating and hugely persistent finish. This displays terrific potential but it is a robust wine to buy only if you have the wherewithal and patience to wait.

Red Burgundy de Montille 2011 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 1 Case 3 150cl £295
  • Tasting note: This is also quite restrained with ultra-pure aromas of wet stone, floral hints, sandalwood and very fresh red berry fruit scents. There is a focused power to the robust yet refined medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of supporting sap that helps to buffer the otherwise firm and well-integrated tannic spine on the explosively long, balanced and moderately austere finish. This beauty will also require ample patience.

Red Burgundy de Montille 2011 Vosne 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Christiane 1 Case 6 75cl £2,150£1,935
  • Good full medium red. Dark cherry, raspberry, pungent spices, pepper and graphite minerality on the nose. Sappy and saline but less fruity and more introspective today than the "regular" Malconsorts, with nicely integrated flavors of spices, flowers and minerals currently holding the upper hand over the wine's dark fruits. Finishes with superb, slowly mounting length and dusty tannins. This serious, uncompromising, classically dry wine will need to expand in bottle and should ultimately merit a higher score.

Red Burgundy de Montille 2011 Vosne 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Christiane 1 Case 3 150cl £2,250£2,150
  • This is aromatically similar except for the markedly more pronounced spice component which is broader still and perhaps just a touch more elegant. There is outstanding volume and richness to the large-scaled flavors that display superb delineation and ample minerality before culminating in a mouth coating finish of Zen-like harmony and stunning length. This is an indisputable 'wow' wine.

Red Burgundy de Vogue 2011 Musigny Vieilles Vignes - 1 Case 3 150cl £2,280
  • A remarkably attractively cool and restrained nose of various red berries, spice and a beautiful array of floral elements complements well the rich and equally cool mineral-tinged big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors. There is a really lovely sense of underlying tension on the clean and pure finish that delivers strikingly good length. This intensely mineral-driven effort is also clean and firm but with slightly better phenolic maturity to the supporting structural elements which should allow this beauty to age successfully for many years to come. The wines are classic burgundies with good terroir transparencies that should age extremely well. In fact about the only thing that I don't like is the fact that quantities were down from 30 to 50% in our upper level wines." I observed last year that the domaine had seriously outperformed the general quality of the 2011 vintage. Now that the wines are in bottle, and several are revisited below, I stand by that statement as they are terrific and this is true from top to bottom. (The Sorting Table, www.thesortingtable.com, Napa, CA (excludes CA and HI) and Chambers & Chambers Wine Merchants, www.chamberswines.com, San Francisco, CA (CA and HI); O.W. Loeb, www.owloeb.com, Berry Bros & Rudd, www.bbr.com, Flint Wines, www.flintwines.com, all UK) .
Tasting note: A discreet touch of wood sets off the spicy black cherry, cassis and floral aromas that slide gracefully into rich, generous and opulent large-scaled flavors that display both excellent volume and fine phenolic maturity of the structural items, all wrapped in a mouth coating and mildly austere finish. This is every bit as long as the Malconsorts but not quite as deep. That said, there is an abundance of dry extract here and it could match it in time.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Vosne 1er Cru Beaux Monts 2 Case 6 75cl £325
  • Tasting note: A very spicy nose of primarily black cherry and cassis aromas also precedes very round, supple and forward flavors that possess the same attractively textured mouth feel to the medium-bodied flavors that also seem to lack a bit of energy on the nicely lingering finish. Again, it's possible that this is just fatigued and this is quite plausible given that Beaux Monts naturally has good acid levels.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Clos Saint Denis 3 Case 6 75cl £690
  • Tasting note: A tight and while not completely closed, it would be fair to describe as the nose of subtly layered and spicy dark currant aromas as highly restrained. By contrast, there is fine vibrancy and freshness to the silky and focused middle weight flavors that are shaped by fine grained if distinctly firm tannins, all wrapped in a wonderfully intense, mouth coating, impressively persistent and austere finish. This may be a Clos St. Denis of finesse but it doesn't lack for power or seriousness.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Mazis Chambertin 1 Case 12 75cl £1,025
  • Tasting note: There is a bit more wood on the fresh and open sauvage-infused nose of both red and dark currant, earth and game hints. There is excellent volume to the very smooth and polished mid-palate of the broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of dry extract before culminating in a mineral-inflected, powerful and long finish. This moderately firm effort is supported by tannins that are ripe if borderline rustic. A classic Mazis.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Chambolle 1er Cru Les Baudes 9 Bottle 75cl £45
  • Tasting note: The nose is quite similar to that of the Fuées except that here there is a bit more oak influence. As is almost always the case, the mouth feel is less refined but more muscular with good power, volume and punch to the medium-bodied flavors that finish with excellent length. This should also amply reward up to a decade of cellar time.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Chambolle 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2 Bottle 300cl £795
  • Tasting note: A spicy and notably floral nose of attractively layered aromas features notes of cassis, black cherry and plum aromas. There is a lovely mineral streak that runs the length of the refined medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent complexity, all wrapped in a balanced, lingering and lilting finish. I very much like the finesse and brilliant mouth feel as it's pure silk.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Musigny 2 Bottle 300cl £2,500
  • Tasting note: Background notes of wood are discernible but stop short of being invasive as they still allow the restrained, cool and pure dark berry fruit and black cherry aromas to shine. Interestingly this is less overtly spicy as the Amoureuses at present though there is a genuinely gorgeous inner mouth perfume to the suave, round and polished middle weight plus flavors that possess plenty of underlying muscle and power on the hugely long, balanced and impressively complex finish. While clearly firmly structured, this is somewhat more forward and approachable than is typical for this wine.

Red Burgundy Jadot, Louis 2011 Gevrey Clos Saint Jacques 2 Case 6 75cl £475
  • Tasting note: A very pretty and expressive nose features notes of relatively high-toned red berry fruit allied with ample amounts of earth and sauvage characters. The lighter weight (but by no means dilute) middle weight flavors exude an intense minerality while displaying excellent delineation and punch on the balanced and impressively long finish that evidences just a hint of acid tang. This doesn't have the sheer density of say the 2009, 2010 or 2012 vintages but I very much like the flavor authority. Note that this benefitted enormously from several hours of air, indeed the wine was notably better the next day. In sum, this won't knock you out out with power but it's one classy and ultra-pure wine.

    Outstanding
Note: from a 2.2 ha parcel raised in 70% new wood

Tasting note: Discreet wood sets off ultra-fresh and airy aromas of red currant, blue berries and plum that are trimmed in hints of wet stone and earth. There is a wonderfully refined mouth feel to the mineral-tinged middle weight flavors that possess an appealing verve along with superb detail on the harmonious and exceptionally persistent finish. This very firm effort is textbook Clos St, Jacques.
