2017 was not an easy act to follow, but the 2018 Aconcagua Costa "Las Pizarras" Chardonnay managed nicely. From a cool year, it has notes of white flowers and nuts and is a little lighter than the 2017, which was more structured. It doesn't have the depth and sharpness of the 2017, but it has very good freshness. It's vertical and mineral and has nice tension, following the path of the 2015 and 2017. This is now matured mostly in 300- and 400-liter oak barrels, and the oak is nicely integrated. Only 50% of the wine went through malolactic. 6,557 bottles and 60 magnums were filled in February 2019.

Issue 244 End of August 2019, The Wine Advocate

There is a jump in quality in the 2018 Aconcagua Costa "Las Pizarras" Pinot Noir, from what was a cold year in Aconcagua Costa, slightly drier and slightly cooler than 2016. So, I'm not surprised this cool-climate variety behaved quite well. The wine has great purity and transparency and is very clean and expressive, with good complexity and aromas of blood orange and sour cherries, a note of iron and a touch of cinnamon. They used some full clusters in the fermentation, which seems to have added some grip, and the wine matured mostly in 300- and 500-liter oak barrels. It has abundant, fine-grained tannins, good weight and juicy fruit and comes through as nicely textured, balanced and elegant, but not heavy or ripe. The wine is a lot more elegant, and I think it's the best vintage so far of a wine that can now be the benchmark for the variety in Chile.

  • The blue fruit and dark berry aromas are so attractive and catching. Black licorice and blackberry notes. Full body, chewy yet polished tannins. I like the way the wine rolls over the tongue. Beautiful finish. One of the most structured Viñedo Chadwicks ever. A great bottle. Needs four to five years to soften.

  • “Viñedo Chadwick is a little warmer as a zone than the vineyards of Seña, but the wine is still very fresh, with moderate alcohol, perfectly ripe fruit and super integrated oak, coming through as elegant within the powerful style of the zone, with red and black fruit, some aromatic herbs, the cedary and spicy notes of the variety and the signature tannins of Cabernet, keeping the juiciness of the last few years. The little bit of Petit Verdot in the blend gives it a spicy touch. It’s vibrant, balanced and intense, still a little young and creamy, and I’d wait a little bit longer before pulling the cork. This can surely age in bottle, as it has the ingredients and the balance to do so; it has the elegance of 2016 with a little more structure and depth—and a little more clout too.” (97 points - Luis Gutiérrez, August 2020)

“The aromas show blackcurrant, pine-tree, violet and light spearmint character. Full-bodied, yet reserved and tight with fine, creamy tannins. Hints of currants and fresh herbs. Extremely long and layered.” (98 points - James Suckling, April 2020)

“... the 2018 Chadwick is the best release yet from this polo-field turned world class vineyard. Elegant and ethereal, with no sign of tell-tale Chilean eucalyptus, it’s a red that could easily be slipped incognito into tasting of top Bordeaux crus classés. More Margaux than Pauillac in style, with raspberry and red cherry fruit and supple, fine-grained tannins...” (99 points - Tim Atkin MW, September 2020)

  • “Of a deep violet red colour, the complexity on the nose conceals its many subtleties, unfolding floral notes alongside red and black fruits, denoting its distinctive freshness. Several layers are unveiled delivering notes of cedar, tobacco, bitter chocolate and truffles. An elegant, tense and yet very attractive wine, it generously offers fresh and juicy fruit that reminds of blueberries, raspberries, some spices and Cuban cigar box notes. Above all, Seña 2018 is a truly captivating wine that accomplishes a unique balance between power and elegance. I believe we are beholding one of the greatest vintages ever crafted in the 25 years of Seña’s history.” Francisco Baettig, Chief Winemaker , February 2020

“This is a very elegant vintage of Seña, a year with a slow ripening so that the grapes achieved very good ripeness and full development of aromas and flavors, making the wine nuanced and complex, with depth but also freshness and finesse – floral and expressive ... This has to be the finest vintage of Seña to date.” (98 points - Luis Gutiérrez, August 2020)

“This is a very thoughtful Seña that shows unique aromas of warm earth, mushrooms and conifer, turning to dark berries and black olives. The palate is more glamorous with ultra-fine tannins that envelop your palate. Shows power and vibrancy at the end.” (100 points - James Suckling, April 2020)

“Average growing season temperatures at Seña were significantly lower in 2018 than in 2017 and that, coupled with a subtle Pacific Ocean influence, has delivered a fresher style. For all that, it remains the most exotic and “Mediterranean” of the top Errázuriz reds, with more colour than its partners and top notes of rosemary and lavender. The palate is still quite firm, with sinewy tannins, toasty, cigar-box oak and good depth and structure.” (96 points - Tim Atkin MW, September 2020)
